New Owners Turn Plantation Into Sports Bar

A country-style Valley landmark just went to the ballgame.

Donahue’s Restaurant & Sports Bar is the new name of the former Plantation Steak House and Landmark Lounge, 8122 E. Sprague.

The business, known for the rock pyramid out front that marks where the Mullan Trail once ran, is dropping the country motif altogether.

“It’s been totally redone,” manager Margaret Bainter said. “We’ve spent quite a bit of money on it.”

The remodel, which began last October, cost partners Jane and Patrick Donahue and Daryl Johnston about $100,000.

Donahue’s definitely makes a run with the sports bar theme. The place now has 10 televisions and a satellite hookup. The staff dress in rugby shirts.

“What we’re really trying to do is have a place where people can have a really good meal, but don’t have to dress up for,” Bainter said.

The lounge area will offer beer, wine and hard liquor; the restaurant half of the operation will feature relaxed fine dining.

The biggest obstacle, Bainter said, is getting customers to realize the business just isn’t the Plantation anymore.

“It’s a sports bar, not a country place,” she said.

Florist shop sold

Henry Harkins went from raising buildings to raising roses.

The former construction worker recently purchased Every Bloomin’ Thing Floral & Gifts, a business at University City North.

Harkins said was the victim of a hit and run driver. Injuries he sustained in the accident prevented him from doing difficult physical labor.

In a search for a new kind of job, he attended business classes at Spokane Community College.

After completing his studies, Harkins decided he didn’t just want a new job. He wanted to run things himself.

Every Bloomin’ Thing sells flowers, plants, holiday arrangements, stuff animals, cards and gifts.

The 20-year-old business has been operating in its current location for eight years.

New foot and ankle clinic

Dr. Tom Burghart opened a new podiatry practice this week.

The 37-year-old physician specializes in general foot and ankle care as well as sports medicine.

The practice is located in suite 200 of the Medicus Building, 12615 E. Mission. The building is located just north of Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Burghart did his undergraduate studies at the University of Washington and later attended the California College of Podiatric Medicine.

It was his time at UW that made him love the Northwest, but he didn’t want to deal with the West Side’s fast pace and slow traffic.

Burghart recently completed a residency at the University of Southern California Medical Center.
