North Central Defeats Mead, 51-49

Adam Hieb scored a career-high 19 points and North Central hit its free throws late in the game to defeat No. 9 Mead 51-49 in the late Greater Spokane League boys basketball game at the Arena Friday night.
The Indians (7-7, 4-6) handed the Panthers (10-5, 8-3) their second straight loss after nine straight wins.
Jerry Holdren added 12 points for NC, which was without Troy Kapelke. Mead held NC’s leading scorer, Marshall Kuhlman, to four points.
The Indians allowed Mead’s three big scorers to reach double figures, but held both Damian Long and Ralph Castaneda below their averages.
Mead won the first matchup by 19.

The Highlanders (6-9, 5-6) made 26 of 32 free throws, including 13 of 14 in the fourth quarter, to defeat the visiting Tigers (10-5, 6-5).
Nate Dunham scored 26 points, 14 coming from the foul line. He was 8 of 8 in the fourth quarter. Kerry Hipps was 5 of 6 from the line in the final period.
Shadle, which also got 17 points from Oliver Cook, took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it up.
Mike Homer had a career-high 26 for LC, hitting five 3-pointers, and Paul Mencke added 20 points.

At CV, the third-ranked Saxons (13-1, 9-1) broke away from the Bears (8-7, 5-6) in the second half to win for the sixth straight time.
Chris Hardan scored 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Justin Bursch scored all 11 of his points in the second half. The Bears held the Saxons’ leading scorers, Scott Stocum and Leonard Harmon, to a combined 12 points. But CV couldn’t stop the guards from picking up the slack.
Ferris made 22 of 43 shots while CV was just 17 of 50. Craig Schuh led the Bears with 20 points.

The Titans (8-7, 5-6) broke the game open in the third quarter to beat the Pirates (1-14, 0-11).
University stretched a four-point half-time lead to 14 entering the fourth quarter. The Titans protected the lead by making 20 of 25 free throws. Kelly Hineman finished with 18 for U-Hi.
The Pirates had nine of their 16 turnovers in the third quarter. Nathan Smith had 10 rebounds for Rogers.
