Old Computer Makes Perfect Gift For Burglarized Church

When burglars struck three Valley churches in November, one of the places they hit was Christ Lutheran Church.

The thieves made off with a computer, a television and a VCR. That computer, the Rev. Tom Shelly said, was something his staff used every day.

But just when news like that makes you give up on humanity, someone comes along and rekindles a little spark of hope. Dale Damron is one of those people.

Earlier this week, Damron was preparing to buy a new computer to use in his new home-based insurance claims processing service.

He already had a trusty Macintosh Plus and printer, both of faithful performers, but they didn’t have enough oomph to serve his new needs.

Instead of selling them, he decided to give the hardware away. Remembering the rash of burglaries, Damron called The Spokesman-Review offices and asked for a list of churches that were hit.

“I was just wondering what I could do for them, and then a few months later I had a computer to give them,” he said.

When Damron heard that Christ Lutheran had lost its much-needed PC to the thieves, he knew he had found the right recipient of his trusty Apple.

Damron, who isn’t Lutheran or really anything right now, said he wasn’t trying to be a saint. He was just being practical.

“I just wanted to make sure I was giving it to someone that was going to use it, not just somebody that was going to have their kids play games on it,” he said.

So let’s hear it for practicality. And that little spark it gave us.
