Dozens Of Boats Crushed After Marina Collapses
Port of Portland crews carefully removed dozens of boats Sunday from a marina where the roof collapsed under the weight of 6 to 8 inches of wet snow on Saturday.
Officials estimated there were 80 to 100 boats trapped under the collapsed roof at the Pier 33 Marina.
Late Saturday night, workers floated a containment boom around the marina to keep fuel leaking from damaged boats from spreading into the Columbia River.
While port officials kept other boat owners away, Paul Armstrong went to see if his restored 1955 Chris-Craft cruiser was in danger of sinking.
Against the advice of port officials concerned with his safety, Armstrong boarded his boat and began pumping water out.
Some boat owners said they had complained to the property’s management company that the marina was in disrepair with dry rot and water damage.
