Schuh Helps Hush Indians
GSL boys
Whenever Central Valley needed a big basket, Corby Schuh delivered.
The Central Valley senior pumped in 27 points, hitting 5 of 9 3-pointers, to lead the Bears to a 53-45 win at North Central in a crucial Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Tuesday night.
In the first half, Schuh kept CV in the game with a couple clutch 3’s.
“Those 3’s are huge shots,” NC coach Jay Webber said. “We had so many chances in the first half to open a big lead and never took advantage.”
In the second half, Schuh put the Bears in the position to win; his three 3’s in the third quarter helped make it 35-35 entering the fourth.
“I was real pleased with the way the kids pulled it out,” CV coach Terry Irwin said. “In the third quarter we got good leadership from Jeff Allen, and Corby Schuh, when we needed it, he got it.”
The game was tight until the Bears (6-6, 9-7) went on a 9-0 run, holding the Indians (4-7, 7-8) scoreless for 3:12, to open a 48-38 lead with under a minute to play.
“We just came out flat again,” Schuh said. “There’s something about playing away from CV, we just don’t come out and play like we should.”
The Bears forced the Indians into 6-of-22 shooting and 10 turnovers in the second half.
“We just started putting more pressure on the ball,” Schuh said. “We got some turnovers and turned them into easy baskets. In the first half we just played defense, we didn’t create anything.”
With teams bunching up for the stretch run, every game is crucial.
“Tonight I was very worried,” Irwin said. “NC is playing very well. I knew that, but the kids just look at the score from last time (a 68-56 CV win), the standings and the past record. I told them a whole bunch of us (in league) had six losses but it’s hard not to think ahead to Thursday.”
The GSL resumes action Thursday, instead of Friday, and it’s a rivalry night. Shadle Park and NC play the Groovy Shoes games at the Arena; University is at CV for the Stinky Sneaker games.
