Nomination deadlines are coming up soon for both the Chase Youth Awards and the “A Teacher to Remember” essay contest. The Chase Youth Awards, honoring students in grades K-12 for spectacular contributions to their community, needs all nominations by Feb. 13. Forms can be obtained through all public libraries, community centers and the Chase Youth Commission, sixth floor, City Hall. For more information, dial 625-6440.

All “A Teacher To Remember” essays must be in by 4:30, Feb. 16 and must be accompanied by a completed entry form. This contest honors teachers who have made a special impact on their students. It’s open to any Washington student in grades K-12.

To receive a form, check in your student offices or call the Spokane Education Association at 325-4503. Our Generation will also mail or fax you one. Call 459-5456.

Hit the slopes: Teens age 12 and up are invited to spend the Monday, Feb. 19, school holiday skiing at Silver Mountain with the Spokane Parks and Recreation outdoor recreation staff. The incredibly low prices of $16 or $22 covers your ride to the hill, lift ticket and equipment rental, if needed.

The “Let’s Ski At Silver” activity van leaves the Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh Ave., at 8 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Register by calling 625-6200 and ask for class No. 6026-21.

Something to do: Bored watching the falling snow? Then why not watch the Mead Senior High School Theatre Arts Department’s new production, “The Prodigious Snob”? Performance dates are today, Thursday and Friday, and Feb. 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Large Auditorium at Mead Senior High School.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students. They are available in the Mead High Business Office or can be purchased at the door. For more info, call 466-3050 or 468-3188. Go and support your local teen talent.

Nothing but net: And for all of those depressed with the cloudy, cold weather, the Optimist Club of the Spokane Valley could make your day a little brighter with this year’s Tri-Star Basketball Contest. Shooting, passing and dribbling will be the three skills contestants will be judged on today at Centennial Middle School, 915 N Ella Road.

Registration is at 5:45 p.m. and the contest begins at 6 p.m. Boys and girls will compete against youth only of their own age in six age groups: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Anyone with a pair of gym shoes is eligible to enter the contest.

Awards will be presented for first, second and third place in each age group. Questions? Contact Jim Droppers or Terri Bonallo at 924-6161. The activity is also free, and that alone is something to smile about.

Get involved: Party! Party! Party, at the Spokane Leadership Institute gathering on Saturday at the YMCA. SLI would like to invite anyone interested in SLI to come make valentines for the teens at Crosswalk and learn more about SLI. There will be guest speakers, free food and fun. Admission fee: bring a small-sized toiletry item for Crosswalk teens. Call Anita at 838-6581 for information, room number and reservations. See you there! (Submitted by Megan Cordill)
