Expos Rough Up Braves’ Maddux

Mark Grudzielanek, selected as an All-Star earlier in the day, hit a key two-run single as the Montreal Expos beat Greg Maddux and the visiting Atlanta Braves 5-1 Tuesday night.

Rheal Cormier (4-5) allowed three hits in 7-2/3 innings and won for the first time in five starts since June 5. He struck out five and walked three as the second-place Expos won for the sixth time in nine games and squared their crucial home series with the East Division leaders at a game apiece.

Maddux (8-6) lost for the first time in four starts.

Cubs 15, Pirates 7

Pittsburgh

Ryne Sandberg and Tyler Houston had four hits and four RBIs apiece and Chicago turned a pair of five-run innings into their biggest outburst this season.

Houston, traded Wednesday by Atlanta for a minor-league pitcher, had a pair of run-scoring doubles and two singles in his first Cubs start. Sandberg went 4 for 5 with a run-scoring double and is 12 for 25 in his last five games.

Phillies 3, Mets 2

Philadelphia

Russ Springer won in his first start in nearly a year and Mickey Morandini homered as Philadelphia handed New York its fourth straight loss.

Giants 5, Rockies 1

San Francisco

Barry Bonds capped a five-run eighth with his 23rd homer, a three-run drive into the right-field stands, as San Francisco rallied to beat Colorado.

Dodgers 7, Padres 3

San Diego

Los Angeles, which had five extra-base hits, beat its former star pitcher Fernando Valenzuela and broke out of a tie with San Diego to reclaim sole possession of first place in the N.L. West.

Astros 4, Marlins 3 (12)

Houston

Bill Spiers hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the 12th as Houston beat Florida and stretched its winning streak to four.

Cardinals 4, Reds 3

St. Louis

Ron Gant hit a go-ahead homer against Cincinnati, his former team, after Willie McGee tied the score with a two-run triple as St. Louis survived.

Padres lose Gwynn

San Diego outfielder Tony Gwynn, who has battled an inflamed right heel all season, was diagnosed as having a minor tear of his Achilles tendon and will be sidelined for four weeks.

Clearing the bases

Cincinnati resident Larina Lewis was behind held on $10,000 bond after being arrested Monday night for allegedly making a Molotov cocktail and planning to toss it at Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, who, according to team officials, does not know the woman. … Colorado’s Dante Bichette, who batted .375 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs in June, was voted the league’s player of the month. Montreal’s Jeff Fassero, who posted a 5-0 record and 1.88 ERA, was selected the pitcher of the month.
