Glacier Activities Don’t Wait For Spring Thaw
The snowdrifts are still deep at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, but that doesn’t mean park activities wait for summery weather.
Among the upcoming courses offered by The Glacier Institute is “Wildflowers of the Eastern Slopes,” a scenic walk on the alpine slopes on the east side of the park, Wednesday and Thursday; “Insect Ecology and the Art of Flyfishing” July 13 and 14, and “Ecology Afield” Aug. 4-11, which is more extensive with day hikes and field trips.
For information about other Glacier Institute courses, call (406) 755-1211.
Music fest: It’s not too early to make lodging reservations near Fernie, British Columbia, if you plan to attend the annual Rocky Mountain Music Revival, July 26 and 27.
Last year the event drew a couple of thousand fans, which may not sound like a lot of folks, but even a crowd that size swells Fernie.
The music will be at Snow Valley Ski Resort and this year the bands include Pursuit of Happiness, the Mahones, Jughead and the Mollies.
Ticket and lodging information is available at The Adventure Shop in Fernie at (800) 423-3515.
Nibble at Seattle: The focus is on food at the annual Bite of Seattle at Seattle Center July 19-21.
Thousands of people attend this event to nibble at a vast variety of foods and to enjoy the entertainment. Which means parking is a problem. Rather than park at the Seattle Center, eventgoers can park downtown at the Bon Marche parking garage (Third and Stewart) or at Westlake Center garage (enter on Olive Street) for $5 for the day or $3 Sunday and take the monorail to Seattle Center. Present your monorail stub to the garage attendant when you return and you’ll get the discount. (The monorail fare is $2, $1.50 for kids, $1 for seniors.)
The Bite of Seattle runs 11 a.m.-10 p.m. July 19 and 20, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. July 21.
River cruise: There’s no need to leave the area to take a scenic cruise. The Spokane Riverboat Queen cruises the Spokane River upstream into Lake Coeur d’Alene, a 27-mile, three-hour journey. Afternoon cruises are $15, $13.50 for children and seniors, buffet dinner cruises are $29, buffet Sunday brunch cruises are $23.50; reservations are required, call (208) 765-2367.
The boat docks at Q’melin Park, a quarter-mile downstream from Templin’s Resort in Post Falls.
