Jet Carrying 126 From Seattle Forced To Land
A TWA jet carrying 126 people from Seattle to St. Louis made an emergency landing on one engine Saturday at Eppley Airfield after the second engine failed.
No one was injured and the 11:30 a.m. CDT landing did not cause delays for other flights.
Fire and rescue vehicles met the plane upon its arrival at Eppley. The runway was clear because there were no arrivals or departures scheduled at the time, said John Kennedy, Eppley operations supervisor.
“Your people responded splendidly,” said Capt. Russ Lyons, who piloted the MD-80.
Passengers on Flight 114 knew immediately when the right engine failed.
“It was like a big, loud explosion,” said Chris Warner of Kent, Wash. “Everyone looked at everyone else and said, ‘We’ve never heard that before.’ ” Though some passengers were frightened, several said there was no general panic.
“The flight attendants acted like everything was normal,” said Steve Kaczor of Seattle, who was flying to Indianapolis on vacation. “The captain came on and didn’t act concerned at all.”
