Rainstorms Hit Acapulco Area

Compiled From Wire Services

Fierce rainstorms battered a poor neighborhood in this Pacific Coast resort, killing at least seven people and leaving 500 hundred homeless, authorities said Saturday.

There were no reports of injuries or major damage in the hotel zone frequented by tourists.

Uprooted trees and mud were strewn across roads in the Sinai neighborhood after the storm struck Friday night and continued into Saturday morning. Television footage showed rescue crews wading through streets of knee-deep water.

The rains came one week after Hurricane Boris hammered the region with 90-mph winds.
