Microsoft Targets Texas Pirates

Compiled From Wire Services

Microsoft Corp. said Monday that a concerted effort in Texas to stop illegal copying of its computer programs has resulted in settlements with 31 computer resellers and lawsuits against two others.

Microsoft said an investigation uncovered 33 resellers in the Dallas and Houston areas engaged in “hard disk loading,” a practice in which pirated software is installed on computers that are then sold to customers. The programs involved included MS-DOS and Windows.

Thirty-one of the resellers either stopped the alleged illegal activity after being contacted by Microsoft, or reached negotiated settlements with the company.
