Whits Tab Schwarz For Track

Toby Schwarz has become the first full-time track and field coach at Whitworth College.

Schwarz, who has coached at Pullman High School while completing his Ph.D. in educational leadership at Washington State University, was hired Monday.

“Toby brings great energy, enthusiasm and vision to the physical education and athletic departments at Whitworth,” said athletic director Scott McQuilkin.

Schwarz was Pullman’s head cross country coach and head assistant track and field coach.

Kirk Westre, who served as Whitworth’s track and field coach during the 1995-96 school year, will become a full-time assistant football coach. He coached both sports in 1995-96.

“This move brings us more into line with coaching staffs throughout our conference,” said McQuilkin. “We now have two full-time assistant football coaches and a full-time track and field coach. Previously, Kirk and the coaches who preceded him had to split (coaching) responsibilities.”

Ogle dies

Friends of Jerry Ogle will hold a memorial service and wake Wednesday for the former University of Idaho athlete and Spokane Indians baseball player. Ogle died Friday at age 65.

The service, in the Hillyard hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 3004 E. Queen Ave., will begin at 2 p.m.

Ogle played football and baseball at Idaho and caught for the Indians in 1953 and 1955 before becoming a well known area softball and semipro baseball player. He drove a delivery truck for Joey August Distributors for many years.

AAA Legion baseball

Sam Hess’ two-run single high-lighted a four-run first inning that carried the North Stars to a 5-2 win over the Pullman Patriots in Pullman on Monday.

The North Stars (13-4) parlayed two walks and a throwing error with three singles in the decisive inning.

Clint Ledbetter drove in both runs for Pullman (4-12-1).

Golf

Denny Johnston was 9 over par and 12 shots back of the leaders, but he had as much reason as anyone to celebrate after Monday’s stop of the Athletic Round Table Pro-Am at Stoneridge in Blanchard, Idaho.

Johnston, a senior pro playing out of Sun Dance, scored a hole-in-one on the 16th hole en route to an 81.

A trio of pros - Dan Koesters of the University of Idaho (34-35), Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan (33-36) and Bob Scott of Liberty Lake (38-31) - matched 3-under-par 69s to share the lead.

Pete Caruso of Indian Canyon was low amateur with a 72.

Mark Rohde of Spokane shot a 1-under-par 70 (33-37) to stand six shots off the pace after the first round of the $675,000, 36-hole Ernst Championship at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore, Wash.

Rohde’s score was better than 12 touring PGA pros, including John Daly, who shot 71. Fred Couples and Jay Haas fired 7-under 64s to share the lead.

Eileen Hargrove of Indian Canyon shot a 6-over-par 78 to qualify for the match-play portion of the 95th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Women’s Amateur Tournament in Bellingham.

Hargrove meets Sheryl Scott of Hillcrest, who shot a 76, in first-round action today.
