Harding, Berg Among Top In Nation At Track, Field Event
A pair of Cubs Track Club athletes from the Spokane Valley finished among the top six in the National USA Track and Field age group championships in Salt Lake City.
In her first national championship, Heather Harding finished sixth in the intermediate shot put at 30-5-3/4.
Harding will be a ninth grader at North Pines Junior High and is a first-year intermediate, ages 15-16.
In earlier meets she won the Youth Athletics and Junior Olympics local championships.
She will participate in Junior Olympics Region XIII meet this weekend in Pullman with an eye toward qualifying for the nationals in Houston, July 23-28.
Carolyn Berg, a first-year midget (age 11-12) competitor, finished sixth in the discus with a personal best 72-10-1/2. She also was among the top 10 shot putters with a 26-4-1/4 throw.
Berg, who will be a sixth-grader at McDonald Elementary, won the shot and discus in three previous local meets, the Junior Olympic prelims and finals and the age group qualifier.
Last year she placed fourth in the National Junior Olympics.
She will attempt to qualify again this weekend in Pullman.
It will be the last meet of the season for Cubs T.C. participants, coached by North Pines teacher and coach Bill Berg.
Other regional qualifiers are Bryeanne Putney, Tina Terry, Melissa Loss, Angel Wilson, Amy Nickerson, Adrienne Nowaski.
Also competing are Jackie Button, Linase Neal, Casie Ray, Molly Cheney, Lacie Dahnke, Aubre Debenham, Rachel Higel, Kris Oberhelman, Stephanie Sanborn and Jessie Torres.
