Students Protest Oregon Stadium Lease

University of Oregon student leaders have protested the school’s decision to lease Autzen Stadium to the Promise Keepers, a Christian group that stages men-only rallies.

“Many, many students, staff and administrators have worked hard in the past to make this campus one that is welcoming to all students, regardless of sex, race and sexual orientation,” said Matthew Scotten, president of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon.

Bonnie Kanter, interim director of the student Women’s Center, said women students feel the Promise Keepers rally scheduled Aug. 2-3 could offend women who are “working hard to succeed and take leadership.”

The students plan a petition drive and have scheduled a vigil outside the stadium Aug. 2.
