Hewlett-Packard Layoffs Hit Boise
Hewlett-Packard Co. is offering severance packages to more than 1,000 employees, hoping to lure them into leaving the company voluntarily.
The employees were told during meetings on Thursday that they could receive as much as a year’s pay if they quit Hewlett-Packard, and were given 3-1/2 months to decide.
The offer came in the wake of Wednesday’s announcement that Hewlett-Packard is closing its Disk Memory Division in Boise, leaving 1,150 jobs in limbo.
Company officials estimate that at least 500 employees will lose their jobs, while the other 650 may move into other positions.
Those who decide to accept the severance package will be given six months’ pay plus half a month’s pay for each year of employment at Hewlett-Packard. The maximum under the severance package is a full year’s pay.
The company estimates that about 350 employees will leave voluntarily.
