Bosox Stop Yankees, Wetteland’s Streak

The Boston Red Sox wasted a seven-run lead, then recovered and stopped John Wetteland’s consecutive saves streak, beating the New York Yankees 12-11 Wednesday night on Jeff Fyre’s ninthinning single at Boston.

Boston led 9-2 in the seventh but New York rallied to take an 11-9 lead in the ninth. Wetteland (0-2) then failed to hold it, and his major-league record streak of saves in 24 consecutive appearances came to an end.

Orioles 11, Blue Jays 10

Baltimore

Bobby Bonilla’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth capped a two-run rally against Mike Timlin that lifted Baltimore to a comeback over Toronto.

The Orioles blew an early 7-3 lead and lost an 8-7 advantage in the eighth, then overcame a 10-8 deficit to beat Timlin for the second time in three games.

Royals 3, Indians 2

Kansas City, Mo.

Jose Offerman doubled twice and Kansas City took advantage of a leaky Cleveland defense.

Tim Belcher (8-5) allowed nine hits in eight innings. Jeff Montgomery finished for his 20th save of the season and the 238th of his career, tying Dan Quisenberry’s team record.

Rangers 7, Angels 3

Juan Gonzalez extended his career-high hitting streak to 19 games with a two-run homer and RBI double as Texas beat California.

Texas starter Ken Hill (10-5) gave up six hits and two walks in the first three innings, but escaped with only two runs, then settled down to notch his third straight decision.

Brewers 3, Tigers 2 (10)

Milwaukee

Jesse Levis singled home Jose Valentin from second base with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Milwaukee a win.

Twins 4, White Sox 3

Minneapolis

Denny Hocking, who entered the game batting .169, went 3 for 4 and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Clearing the bases

The Royals signed George Kauffman, the grandson of club founder Ewing Kauffman … Kauffman, a right-handed pitcher from Stetson, was sent to the Royals rookie team in Fort Myers, Fla. The Rangers were without first baseman Will Clark, who strained his right calf running out a grounder in Tuesday’s game.
