Obituaries

Pymrel Silzel Bivins Oakesdale, Wash.

Service for Pymrel Silzel Bivins, 84, will be at 11 a.m Monday at Community Presbyterian Church in Oakesdale. Burial will follow at Oakesdale Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bivins died Wednesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

She was born near Oakesdale, and graduated from high school there. She graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla with a degree in biology and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

In 1933 she married Milton Silzel in Spokane. They settled near Oakesdale and farmed. He died in 1975.

She married Earnest Bivins in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1975. They lived in Oakesdale and spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Bivins died in 1985, and Mrs. Bivins settled at the family farm near Oakesdale.

She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Oakesdale; P.E.O. Chapter A.T., a philanthropic educational organization; the Wednesday Bridge Club; the board of directors for the Tekoa Medical Foundation; and the Whitman County Library Board. She also was active with the Oakesdale Historical Society.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Silzel of Oakesdale and Wayne Silzel of Villa Park, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Sexton Bugg of Woodinville, Wash.; a stepson, Donald Bivins of Libby, Mont.; two brothers, Wayne Warwick of Spokane and Leslie Warwick of Port Angeles, Wash.; six grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tekoa Care Center or the Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church.

Mike Grobe Spokane

Service for Mike C. Grobe, 85, is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Private burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Mr. Grobe, who was born in Merrill, Wis., died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school and college in Wisconsin.

He worked as a civil service employee at Fairchild Air Force Base in housing maintenance.

He had lived in Spokane for 41 years and was a member of St. John Vianney Parish and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He had been active with the Boy Scouts.

His wife, Ardis Grobe, preceded him in death.

Mr. Grobe is survived by three sons, Ronald Grobe of Spokane, John Grobe of Portland and David Grobe of Arlington, Va.; three daughters, Sharon Schmehl of Spokane, Janet Platt of Newman Lake and Judy Stone of Jessup, Ga.; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Marialice Holt Spokane

Memorial service for Marialice Holt, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Park Fidelity Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holt died Tuesday.

She was born Puyallup, Wash., and had lived in Spokane for 46 years.

She worked as a bookkeeper.

She is survived by a daughter, Joy Painter of Fountain Valley, Calif.; and a brother, Vernon Tomlinson of Kennewick.

Sylvia Purcell Spokane

Memorial service for Sylvia (Topping) Purcell, 86, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Purcell, who was born in Lewiston, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Washington State College with a music degree. She met her husband, Adrian “Brick” Purcell at the college.

Her husband died in 1943, and she moved to Spokane and began her teaching career. She was a special music teacher at several Spokane schools and taught first grade at Adams Elementary for 12 years.

After she retired, she worked as a volunteer for the YWCA, the local Arthritis Foundation and a project matching retirees with job opportunities.

She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

She is survived by a son, Jim Purcell, and a daughter, Mary Jean Purcell, both of the San Francisco area.

David Hancock Spokane

Graveside memorial service for David C. Hancock, 67, will be at 2 p.m. today at Peone Prairie Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hancock, a 30-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He was born in Shippensburg, Pa.

He served in the Navy for 22 years and served in the Korean War.

He was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Eagles Lodge No. 2, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474, the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Mr. Hancock is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dolores “Dody” Hancock; two daughters, Judy McMullen of Nine Mile Falls and Tracy Colburn of Elk, Wash.; two sons, David Hancock of Algona, Wash., and Kevin Hancock of South Dakota; four stepsons, Jim Smith, Stephen Foster, and John and Jerry Brady, all of Spokane; a brother, Lawrence Hancock of Chambersburg, Pa.; five sisters, Rhoda Morton of Bradenton, Fla., Anna Kendall and Betty Johnson, both of Shippensburg, Mary Lou Durf of Newville, Pa., and Stella Berrick of Carlisle, Pa.; a stepsister, Alice Schaffer of Shippensburg; his former wife, Jean Hancock; seven grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Bruce McKay Spokane

Visitation for Bruce R. McKay, 93, is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Endicott (Wash.) Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born in Endicott, Wash., Mr. McKay died Tuesday.

He was a farmer in the St. John, Wash., area, and later in Endicott. He moved to Cheney and operated a farm in Amber, Wash. He also ran rodeo stock in the Cheney area in the 1920s and 1930s.

He retired in 1972 and moved to Spokane.

He was a charter member of the Amber Grange Wheat Growers and was a member of the Washington State Cattlemen’s Association and the Graves Township Board.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sarah McKay; a son, Donald McKay of Spokane; a daughter, Barbara Van Vleck of Napa, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Shirley Cain Spokane

Visitation for Shirley T. Cain, 79, is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Cain, who died Wednesday, was born Shelby, Mont.

She moved to Wisconsin when she was young and graduated from high school there.

She also graduated from Riverfalls (Wis.) College and San Diego State College.

She began teaching in Danberry, Wis., and taught for 10 years in a one-room school.

She moved to Spokane in 1948 and was a kindergarten teacher at Willard and Linwood schools. She retired in 1974. She was a 45-year member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Cain is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clyde Cain; two sons, David and George Cain, both of Spokane; a daughter, Betsy Trefry of Spokane; a brother, Clair Melin of Grantsburg, Wish., and three grandchildren.

Norman Stobb Spokane

Memorial service for Norman Stobb, 74, is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gretna Green Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stobb, who died last Saturday, was born in Snohomish, Wash.

He had worked as the area director for the state Department of Employment Security. He retired in 1977 after 30 years with the state.

He had lived in Spokane for the past 18 years.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Stobb; three daughters, Norma Shaeffer of Yakima, Jane Smith of Colville, Wash., and Mary Salvador of California; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital For Crippled Children.
