A’S Outlast Rangers In Home Run Fest

Scott Brosius hit a three-run homer and broke a 7-7 tie with a sixth-inning single Sunday night as the Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 11-8 for their fifth victory in six games.

Terry Steinbach homered twice, hitting his 21st in the seventh to extend Oakland’s lead to 9-7. Jason Giambi and Damon Mashore also homered for the A’s, who lead the majors with 161 and have a club-record homer streak of 17 games.

Texas hit four homers, including a two-run shot from Rusty Greer, who tied a Rangers record by going 5-for-5. Juan Gonzalez, Kevin Elster and Lee Stevens also homered for Texas.

Brewers 3, Yankees 2

Milwaukee Rookie Jeff D’Amico outpitched Jimmy Key and John Jaha hit his 20th homer of the season to lead Milwaukee to a victory over New York.

The 20-year-old D’Amico (3-2), the youngest player in the majors, allowed two runs on Ruben Sierra’s second-inning home run. He gave up four hits, struck out two and walked two.

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 4 (12) Toronto

Jacob Brumfield bowled over Detroit catcher Brad Ausmus to score on a two-out single by Alex Gonzalez in the 12th inning, giving Toronto a victory over the Tigers.

Ed Sprague’s two-run homer in the eighth pulled the Blue Jays into a 4-4 tie. It was his 25th homer of the season.

Orioles 10, Red Sox 6 (10) Boston

Heathcliff Slocumb hit Mark Smith with a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, letting loose a five-run burst that gave Baltimore a win over Boston.

Indians 7, Twins 5 Cleveland

Jeromy Burnitz hit two homers, including a two-run shot after a sloppy play by Minnesota, giving Cleveland a victory over the Twins.

The Indians trailed 5-4 going into the fifth when Manny Ramirez led off with a popup to the right of the mound off Brad Radke (5-13) that fell for a double. Burnitz hit the next pitch into the right-field bullpen for his fifth home run and added a solo shot in the sixth.

White Sox 6, Royals 3 Chicago

Rookie Chris Snopek hit two home runs and drove in four runs and Robin Ventura added a two-run homer to lead Chicago over Kansas City.

Snopek hit a solo homer with one out in the second and a three-run homer with two out in the sixth. It was the first two-homer, four-RBI game of his career, and it helped the Sox snap a four-game losing streak.

Wilson Alvarez (12-5) scattered six hits, struck out six and walked three over seven innings.

Clearing the bases

Boston’s Roger Clemens struck out his 2,494th batter and moved past Don Drysdale into 20th place on the all-time career list. … The Brewers have four players - Greg Vaughn, Fernando Vina, John Jaha, and Jose Valentine - on pace to score 100 runs. The last Brewer to score 100 runs was Paul Molitor with 133 in 1991. … The Detroit Tigers have hit 15 home runs in their last nine games. … Terry Steinbach reached the 20-homer single-season mark for the first time. He has 118 homers in 11 seasons with the Athletics. … The Rangers had back-to-back homers for the sixth time this season. … Cleveland’s Kenny Lofton is 13 for 13 in steal attempts since being thrown out by Seattle catcher Dan Wilson on June 5.
