Young Driver Escapes When Jeep Sinks

A Harrison, Idaho, teenager lost control of his vehicle on state Highway 97 Sunday afternoon and wound up sinking it in Lake Coeur d’Alene.

William J. Hitchcock, 16, managed to escape without injury, the Idaho State Police said.

Hitchcock was driving northbound in a 1986 Jeep Cherokee near Beauty Bay Hill when he came around a curve, drifted across the center line and overcorrected.

The vehicle slid backward off a 200-foot-high embankment into the lake, the state police said. Hitchcock was later cited for speeding.
