Obituaries

Claude Wolverton Spokane

Service for Claude W. Wolverton, 79, will be at 11 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Wolverton died Thursday. He was born in Pocatello, Idaho.

He married Gertrude Bosse in Coeur d’Alene in 1948.

He worked for Victor Chimienti Trucking and Joe Peirone Produce as a truck driver for several years before retiring in 1968.

He was a 54-year resident of Spokane and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 and the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Wolverton served in the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was part of the first wave in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Jo Ann Strobeck of Spokane; four sons, Dennis Wright of Pocatello, Thomas Wolverton of Newman Lake, Jerry Wolverton of Veradale and Wayne Wolverton of Spokane; a brother, Jean Wolverton of Idaho Falls; four sisters, Leah Bahler of Priest River, Idaho, Verda Wilson and Velma Hirschi, both of Pocatello, and Jo Ann Bloom of Texas; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Dianne Hendrix Coeur d’Alene

Service for Dianne E. Hendrix, 54, will be held at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Mrs. Hendrix, who was born in St. Maries, died Friday.

She grew up in St. Maries, graduating from St. Maries High School in 1960. She attended Kelsey-Baird Business School in Spokane.

She worked as a legal secretary in St. Maries and was a secretary and bookkeeper in the Silver Valley for many years before moving to Coeur d’Alene.

In 1988 she became a senior examiner for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Illness forced her to retire in 1995.

Mrs. Hendrix was a member of the Christian Life Center in Kellogg.

Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Michaul; one son, Dennis Wadsworth of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, JoAnne Hardrick and Kim Wadsworth, both of Spokane; one stepson, Jim Hendrix of Grangeville, Idaho; her parents, Jess and Esther Whitehead of St. Maries; two brothers, John and Jim Whitehead, both of St. Maries; four sisters, Lela Morris of Plummer, Idaho, Paula Johannes of Rochester, Wash., Jeanne Miller of St. Maries and Nancy Wadsworth of Lewiston; and eight grandchildren.

Karl Martin Spokane

Service for Karl G. Martin, 73, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Born in Hugo, Colo., Mr. Martin died Saturday.

He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Mead for 32 years as a heavy-equipment operator. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Martin married Wilma Catlett in Southwick, Idaho, in 1976.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Karl Martin Jr. of Federal Way, Wash., and Dennis Martin of Spokane; two stepsons, Gary Catlett of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ted Catlett of Spokane; two daughters, Elizabeth Pirello of Maple Valley, Wash., and Rebeca Julien of Spokane; two brothers, Cliff Martin of Colorado Springs and Robert Martin of Ordway, Colo.; three sisters, Reva Warner of Port Angeles, Wash., and Mildred Thurman and Marjorie Morgan, both of Pueblo, Colo.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Paschal Mary Jones Spokane

Funeral Mass for Paschal Mary Jones, 88, was Monday at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Boulder Junction, Wis. Mrs. Jones, who was born in Wisconsin, died Friday.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Jones of Davenport, Wash., and Harry Jones of Arkansas; a daughter, Patsy McLaughlin of Atlanta; two stepdaughters, Shirley Sleight and Dorothy Uthe, both of Wisconsin; and 16 grandchildren.

Herbert Fudge Spokane

Graveside service for Herbert F. Fudge, 96, is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fudge, who was born in England, died Saturday.

He came to the United States when he was 9 and lived in Hayden Lake, Idaho.

He worked as a miner in the Coeur d’Alene mines and at Farragut Naval Base. He retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1965.

His wife of 64 years, Frances Hyde, died in 1994.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 46.

Mr. Fudge is survived by three daughters, Gerene Etier of Spokane, Barbara Kallwick of Longview, Wash., and Marie McDonnal of Beaverton, Ore.; a brother, Richard Fudge of Spokane; two sisters, Vera Krewson of Spokane and Rosalie Bartzen of Butte, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Roy Baird Spokane

Visitation for Roy W. Baird, 98, is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Baird, who died Saturday, was born in Spangle.

He drove a horse team and wagon hauling sand and bricks for the construction of the Davenport Hotel and the Monroe Street Bridge. He was a fabricating foreman for General Machinery and helped build the ice machine that froze a hillside and allowed footings to be poured for Grand Coulee Dam. He retired in the late 1960s.

His wife of 61 years, Alice Baird, died in 1983.

He is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Harris, and a son, Donald Baird, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Brendan’s Care Center or Morning Star Boy’s Ranch.

Joy Bailey Spokane

Service for Joy B. Bailey, 62, is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shilo Hills Ward. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Boise, Mrs. Bailey died Friday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 27 years.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shilo Hills Ward.

Mrs. Bailey is survived by her husband of 39 years, Albert Bailey; two sons, Wayne Bailey of Germany and Leroy Bailey of Spokane; her father, Joy Bernell Marchant of Moscow, Idaho; three brothers, Morris Marchant of Boise, Lynn Marchant of Lewiston and David Marchant of Coeur d’Alene; five sisters, Rose Gentry and Phylis Slater, both of Spokane, Sarah Platt of Idaho, Verner Beldin of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Leloa Rush of Pocatello, Idaho; and three grandchildren.

Amy Olson Spokane

Graveside service for Amy J. Olson, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Vining, Minn., Mrs. Olson died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 29 years.

Mrs. Olson was a member of Glad Tiding Assembly of God.

She married Arthur Olson in Breckenridge, Minn., in 1935.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Dean, Lyle and Daniel Olson, all of Spokane; three daughters, Marilyn Zevart of Renton, Wash., Sharon Hjelm of Ellensburg, Wash., and Valentine McAllister of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Ione Olson of Wahpeton, N.D.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Romala Wolfe Spokane

Graveside service for Romala Bell Wolfe, 73, will be at 11 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wolfe, who was born in Gordon, Neb., died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in the Mead area for more than 18 years.

Her husband, Darrell Wolfe, died in 1988.

She is survived by two sons, Tommie Brice of Fall City, Wash., and Bobbie Brice of Rapid City, S.D.; a brother, Jimmy Sawtell of Butte, Mont.; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Pankey Spokane

Service for Lloyd D. Pankey, 45, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment is planned.

Mr. Pankey died Friday in an automobile accident near Priest Lake, Idaho. He was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He graduated from Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle and was a self-employed salesman.

Survivors include a son, Joel Pankey of Spokane; his parents, Charles and Irene Pankey of Spokane; and a brother, Eddie Pankey of White Salmon, Wash.

Marie Cozza Spokane

Service for Marie R. Cozza, 67, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Cozza died Friday.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident.

Mrs. Cozza worked as a nurses’ aide in nursing homes.

Mrs. Cozza is survived by two sons, Jim and John Galpin, both of Spokane; a daughter, Gina Cozza of Spokane; her mother, Santa Cozza of Spokane; a brother, Frank Cozza of Spokane; and two sisters, Elaine Morris of Spokane and Donna Burns of Davenport, Wash.

Louie Albi Spokane

Service for Louie F. Albi, 61, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Albi, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and worked as an auto mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Albi.

Rachel (Rawson) Wilson Spokane

Service for Rachel Lois (Rawson) Wilson, 91, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bowish Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch in Ogden, Utah. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Born in Idaho, Mrs. Wilson died Friday.

She moved to Spokane from Whittier, Calif., in 1982.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane 10th Ward, and played the organ for her church.

Her husband of 40 years, James Wilson, died in 1972.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois Ceja of Las Vegas, Nev., and Carolyn West of Spokane; three sons, James Wilson of Provo, Utah, Ronald Wilson of American Fork, Utah, and Dennis Wilson of Spokane; a sister, Deane Watkins of Logan, Utah; 27 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

Walter Zabel Sun City, Ariz.

Memorial service for Walter C. Zabel, 82, is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Zabel, who was born in Wibaux, Mont., died Sunday.

He married Helen Phalen in 1940. They settled in Eastern Montana, and he worked as a farmer and carpenter. They moved to Spokane in 1951.

He and his son, Dan, founded Z and Z Construction in Spokane.

In 1973 he married Marguerite Littel. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Zabel recently moved to to Sun City, Ariz.

He was a member of the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Elks Lodge in Spokane.

He is survived by his first wife, Helen Zabel of Peoria, Ariz.; a son, Dan Zabel of Aberdeen, Wash.; three daughters, Carole Imus of Liberty Lake, Dorothy Dickman of Sun City, Ariz., and Susan Zabel of San Jose, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Janelle Alderson of Spokane; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Helen Rowse Spokane

Private burial is planned for Helen E. Rowse. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rowse, 86, died Friday.

A homemaker, she was born in Spokane.

Her husband, Edward Rowse, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a brother, Earl O’Connor, and a sister, Ethel Filibeck, both of Spokane.
