Panel Wants Bow, Arrow Control

From Staff Reports

Spokane County commissioners tonight will consider a proposal that could land Cupid in trouble.

An advisory committee wants commissioners to add bows and crossbows to the list of weapons that can’t be discharged in no-shooting zones. That includes most of the Valley and other suburban and semi-rural neighborhoods.

The county’s no-shooting ordinance, adopted in 1957, defines weapons that can’t be fired as any airgun or firearm “which projects any bullet, shot, slug, pellet, BB, or any other missile or projectile of any nature.”

While an arrow could be considered a missile, it’s more of a reach to consider a bow a firearm, said Commissioner John Roskelley.

Commissioners have scheduled a hearing on the proposal as part of their regular weekly meeting, which starts at 5 p.m. in the Public Works building, 1116 W. Broadway.

Roskelley, who lives on 40 acres where shooting is allowed and sometimes hunts with a bow, said he’ll wait to hear if archers have caused any problems before deciding how to vote.
