Opal Fleckenstein Spokane

Memorial service for Opal R. Fleckenstein, a former Eastern Washington University art teacher, will be at 4 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mrs. Fleckenstein, who was born in Macksville, Kan., died Saturday at home. She was 84.

She received a teaching certificate from Gooding (Idaho) College and began teaching in North Idaho.

She married Fred Fleckenstein in 1939, and they moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Fleckenstein began teaching for the Works Progress Administration in 1939 and was invited to have the first public showing of her artwork at the Pacific Northwest Annual at the Seattle Art Museum. She was also invited to show her work at the Henry Gallery at the University of Washington.

She received a master’s degree from Eastern Washington University.

In 1948 she won the purchase award at the Pacific Northwest Annual and in 1950 she presented a one-artist show at the Seattle Art Museum.

Mrs. Fleckenstein also taught at North Idaho College, and in 1949, began teaching at Eastern Washington State College.

She created documentaries on Mexican art and Hawaiian art, which helped introduce film making as an art to the EWSC curriculum.

She had studied at the University of Hawaii and the San Miguel Allende Institute of Mexico. She also taught at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and at the American Institute in Guadalajara, Mexico. She presented an Art in the Humanities program on KSPS-TV.

In 1976 Cheney Cowles Museum presented a retrospective of her work, and in 1983 and 1985 a collection of her batiks and other works was shown at All Hallows in London.

She retired from Eastern Washington University in 1977 and was named professor of art emeritus at that time.

Her husband, Fred, died in 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Fleckenstein of Edmonds, Wash.; a son, John Fleckenstein of Spokane; a grandson and a great-grandson.

Janet Nelms Hayden Lake, Idaho

Memorial service for Janet M. Nelms, 66, will be held today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene.

Ms. Nelms, who was born in Hood River, Ore., died Monday.

She was raised and educated in Oregon and lived near Salem, Ore., until moving to Spokane in 1960.

She later returned to Salem and worked as a clerk at various businesses before moving to Hayden Lake in 1995 to be near family.

Survivors include a son, Michael Nelms of Spokane; one daughter, Lona Pfeifer of Hayden Lake; her mother, Helen Kitchens of Oregon; three brothers, Roy Kitchens of Bremerton, Bill Kitchens of Vancouver, Wash., and Donny Kitchens, of Port Angeles, Wash.; and two sisters, Helen Winter and Karen Dixon, both of Oregon.

Eileen Auerbach Spokane

Funeral Mass for Eileen Auerbach, 71, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Augusta, Wis., Mrs. Auerbach died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Wisconsin, and from Whitewater (Wis.) State University and Miss Browne’s School of Business in Milwaukee.

She worked as a secretary at Employer’s Mutual Insurance Co. of Wausau, Wis., before marrying Robert Auerbach in 1942 in Las Vegas, Nev.

They moved to Spokane with their children in 1950.

She worked for the Spokane Jaycees as a secretary before going to work as an executive secretary at United Way of Spokane County for 21 years. She retired in 1982.

Mrs. Auerbach was a charter member of St. Peter Catholic Church and was a member of the church Altar Society and Morning Star Boys Ranch Auxiliary.

Her husband, Robert Auerbach, died in 1982.

Survivors include a son, Robert Bruce of Spokane; a daughter, Mary Sue Auerbach-Burns of Ocean Shores, Wash.; a brother, Karl Rick of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Janette Claridge of Wisconsin; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Katheryn King Kellogg

Memorial service for Katheryn K. King, 68, will be today at 1 p.m. at the Idaho Housing Apartments Community Room in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King, who was born in Cleveland, died Sunday.

She moved to North Idaho in 1958 and had attended North Idaho College. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Ernie; one son, Ken King of Hailey, Idaho; her mother, Polly Keye of Nine Mile Falls; one brother, Richard Keye of Reno, Nev.; one sister, Ann Perry of Deer Park; and two grandchildren.

Dotty Restout Hayden Lake, Idaho

Memorial service for Dotty Lou Restout, 63, will be held today at 3 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Hayden Lake.

Mrs. Restout, who was born in Minneapolis, died Monday.

She was raised in Kalispell, Mont., and later lived in Phoenix, Ariz., and various cities in North Idaho before settling in Hayden Lake.

Mrs. Restout had worked as a bookkeeper, office manager and auditor for several General Motors dealerships.

Survivors include her husband of 14 years, Jacques; one son, Rick Dunham of Arizona; two daughters, Christina Miller of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Theresa Janke of Spokane; her father, Earle Fenton of Spokane; one sister, Roberta Garding of Oregon; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robert West Spokane

Memorial Mass for Robert “Bob” James West, 30, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Graveside service will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. West was a passenger on a Douglas DC-6 that crashed Saturday while attempting an emergency landing near the Yukon River village of Russian Mission, Alaska.

He was born in Moscow, Idaho, and graduated from Central Valley High School. He was attending Eastern Washington University.

Mr. West was a flight instructor at Felts Field and was a pilot for Grant Air in Emmonak, Alaska.

He is survived by a son, Taylor West of Belgrade, Mont.; his mother, Ruth West of Spokane; his father, Lester West of Kamiah, S.D.; a stepbrother, Donald West of Orofino, Idaho; and five sisters, Nancy Luvaas of Kennewick, Linda Campbell of Spokane, Susan Hayworth of Longview, Texas, Lillian Gormley of Elk City, Idaho, and Sherri Kirchoff of Redwood City, Calif.

Nels ‘Bud’ Ackerman Colfax, Wash.

Visitation for Nels T. “Bud” Ackerman, 54, will be held at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Private burial service will precede at Colfax Cemetery.

Mr. Ackerman, who was born in Spokane and was a longtime resident of Colfax, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Colfax High School.

He bought Colfax Sheet Metal in 1962 and changed the name to Ackerman Heating and Air Conditioning, which he owned until he retired in 1993.

He had also served in the National Guard.

Mr. Ackerman was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Colfax Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Gloria Ackerman; a son, Scott Akerman of Colfax; a daughter, Jodi Weitze of Colfax; two sisters, Jerry James of Colfax and Delores Baker of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or Peace Lutheran Church.

Olga McClurkin Spokane

Funeral Mass for Olga McClurkin, 81, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McClurkin, who was born in New York City and had lived in Spokane for the past 11 years, died Tuesday.

She had been a resident of Royal Park Care Center for more than three years. Mrs. McClurkin worked in retail.

Her husband, Thomas McClurkin, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Marge Buck of Colbert; and two grandchildren.

Marion Hill Spokane

Service for Marion W. Hill, 66, is set for 2:30 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Hill, who was born in Hockerville, Okla., died Tuesday.

He had lived in Spokane since 1978 and retired from the Postal Service.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51.

Mr. Hill is survived by four sons, John and Brian Hill, both of Spokane, Bernard Hill of Turlock, Calif., and Richard Blakesly of Washington state; a daughter, Tonya Bell of Spokane; three brothers, Merrill Hill of Spokane, Theo Hill of Denver and Emmett Hill of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Rick Parkins Spokane

Memorial service for Richard J. “Rick” Parkins, 37, will be at 4 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Parkins, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday from kidney failure and pneumonia.

He graduated from Rogers High School and was a general contractor and remodeled homes.

He was a member of the Recreational Hockey League and also coached junior hockey and baseball.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeri Parkins, and a son, Ricky Parkins, both of Spokane; his parents, Joyce and Don Parkins of Spokane; two sisters, Judy Irwin of California and Penny Sagendorf of Spokane; and two brothers, Michael Welch-Parkins and Don Parkins, both of Spokane.
