Baseball Showdown At Wv Today
Spokane Valley Baseball championships will be decided today at West Valley High School.
Finalists were determined in a series of games this week in the Giant, Midget and Pee Wee Leagues.
In the league for 13- and 14-year-olds, Greenacres Gypsum won a pair of 11-10 games to reach the finals against Jim Frazier Pro Shop, 3 p.m. on the WV junior varsity baseball field.
Greenacres scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat American Division regular season runnerup Leo’s Photography.
The team weathered National Division regular season champion Olympic Sports’s comeback for the second win.
American Division regular season champion Jim Frazier is 15-1 for the season. Greenacres Gypsum is 13-5.
In the Midget League, Norma’s Burger Barn of Otis improved its record to 15-0 with an 11-1 win over Broadway Eye Care. The team plays Norma’s Burger Barn-Greenacres at WV at 12:30 p.m. Greenacres won 11-10 over Adams to improve to 11-3-1.
Svedala continued its harrowing march through the Pee Wee tournament and plays Dave’s Grill for the championship. They open the tournament at 10 a.m.
Svedala beat Neurosurgery Associates 8-7, its fourth win by two or fewer runs, after going 6-5-1 during the regular season.
Dave’s Grill is now 12-3 after pulling out an 11-10 victory over Spear’s Used Cars. Tyler Luedtke struck out nine batters in three innings to save the win.
It was Dave’s 12th in its last 13 games.
Girls tourneys to final four
Spokane Valley Girls Softball double-elimination tournaments are down to the final four teams in seven divisions.
Still unbeaten going into today’s games at East Valley Middle School are F&F Foundations and Walt’s Mailing in the 16U League. They meet in the semifinals, while Discount Muffler and Toby’s Auto play to remain alive.
Walt’s Mailing and Kwik Kopy are still unbeaten in the 14U West League. Burger King and Dakotah have one loss apiece. In the East, Spokane Golf Cart and Hoffman’s are in the semifinals. Zip’s and A&L Transmission still have hopes.
Adept Escrow and New Image Video advanced to the semifinals in winner’s bracket action during 12U West League play. Power Bar and Eagle Mountain Homes survived in the loser’s bracket.
In the 12U East, Valley Electric and IHOP won their way to the semis. A-1 Dog Grooming won twice as did Carpet One and keep playing.
E.S.S. plays Pioneer Title in the 10U West semifinal and Award Masters and All Lines Insurance meet in the East.
Budget Car Rental and Olympic Sports in the West, Stranberg Electric and Valley Garbage in the East remain in contention.
Games begin at 9 a.m. for loser’s bracket teams and 11:30 for the semifinals.
Birdie leads to win
A birdie on the 15th hole by A flight golfer Terri Schmarr helped her to a Painted Hills Ladies Golf Club-leading score.
Schmarr shot 48 for the day’s low score. Sherrel Roshdy in B and Shelley Van in C had 55s. Carol Grebe shot 63 in D flight. No-handicap golfer Lesa Hambleton had a 52.
Net leaders were Kay Laughlin with 36 in A, Clare Herman with 37 in B, Pam Baynes with 35 in C and Kay Duchesne with 34 in D.
Jacobs leads Valley View field
Valley View Ladies Club golfer Joyce Jacobs recorded low score of the field during last week’s gathering.
She shot a 46 in A flight, ahead of Pat Thompson’s 53 in B, Nola Russel’s 56 in C and no-handicap golfer Jan Askey’s 61.
Net winners last week are Min Arnold in A, Genevra Barrett and Irene Spidle in B and Monica Ryan in C, all with 33s.
Liberty Lake 9’s try MeadowWood
A tournament moved the Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Holers Golf Club to MeadowWood last week.
Change of venue didn’t stop Elaine Tai from shooting a low gross 51 for A flight golfers. Included was a chip-in on the seventh hole.
B flight leader was Mary Gehrman with 57. C flight went to Thompson with 61. And D flight was won by Joan Koppe with 72.
Net winners included Audrey Vanos with 39 in A flight, Alice Vaughn with 37 in B, Joyce Harris with 38 in C and Jan Bernhart with 43 in D.
T-shirt tourney halfway home
First round of the Liberty Lake Ladies Golf Club T-shirt Tournament was completed last week.
Current leaders are the team of Jackie Shea, Rauleen Grimes, Cathy Whitley and Karen Wiggs with a score of 57.
Three teams are tied at 59.
During medal play, Sandy Mooney shot 85 in A flight. Carol Alboucq and Glenda Scott shot 96 in B flight. Betty Blackburn and Marge Doyle shot 107 in C flight. Ethel Rankin had 114 in D flight.
Net winners were Diane Joss and Kerry Barham with 72 in A flight, Ellen Boudewyns, Freda Beckman and Marge Tibbitts with 75 in B, Whitley with 70 in C and Phyllis Bunkowske with 77 in D.
