Walter Morgan shot a course-record 9-under-par 63 to take a five-stroke lead after the first round of the Ameritech Senior Open at Long Grove, Ill.
Morgan birdied Nos. 3-5, 7, 9, 11-13, 16 and 18 to break the Kemper Lakes record of 64 set by Craig Stadler in the 1989 PGA Championship. Morgan also shot a 63 in the 1992 GTE North Classic. Rives McBee, Gibby Gilbert and Bob Murphy opened with 68s.
Vicki Fergon, a 20-year LPGA tour veteran who has missed the cut in five of her last 10 starts, shot a tournament-record 9-under-par 63 to take a six-stroke lead after the second round in the Heartland Classic at St. Louis. She has a 10-under 134 total on the Forest Hills course. Clarkston’s Robin Walton shot 68 on day two for a 142 total, eight strokes off the lead.
Irishman Des Smyth fired a 67 to go 11 under and hold the lead after the second round of the PGA Dutch Open at Hilversum, Netherlands. Smyth has a 131 total and a one-stroke lead.
American John Daly shot an 18-over-par 89 to go with his first-day 75. The tourney’s biggest attraction appeared embarrassed as he handed in his scorecard. Daly refused comment as he rushed off the course.
