Servet Duran Pullman
Graveside service for Servet A. Duran, a retired Washington State University professor, will be at 10 a.m. today at Pullman Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Duran, who died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center, was 76.
Born in Turkey, Mr. Duran came to the United States in 1941. He graduated from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and Stanford University.
In 1947 he and his wife, Martha, moved to Pullman, where he taught physical metallurgy/materials science at WSU.
He served as head of the metals research section and was the chairman of the metallurgy department for many years. In 1969 he was a visiting professor and consultant to Middle East Technical Institute in Ankara, Turkey. He was also a visiting professor at Stanford University from 1956 to 1958.
Mr. Duran was a member of the American Society for Metals and the American Institute of Engineering Educators.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Meliha Duran of Las Cruces, N.M.; two sons, Rick Duran of Winnetka, Ill., and Michael Duran of New York City; a brother, Ozcan Duran of Turkey; and five grandchildren.
Charles VanSlyke Sr. Deer Park
Service for Charles Arthur VanSlyke Sr., 82, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Deer Park. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. VanSlyke, who was born in Wauconda, Wash., died Wednesday.
He retired from Potlatch in Lewiston in 1977 and worked in the parts store for many years in Deer Park Pines Industries.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Clayton Ward.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bonnie; three sons, Charles VanSlyke Jr. of Wenatchee, Jack VanSlyke of Shinnston, W.Va., and Billie VanSlyke; three daughters, Sheila Wiltse of Deer Park, Donna Challinor of Hillsboro, Ore., and Waunita Norris of Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Eva King of Seattle, Dorothy Bronowski of Spokane and Virginia Benjamin of Ferndale, Wash.; three brothers Robert VanSlyke of Kent, Wash., Lee VanSlyke of Colbert and Jay VanSlyke of Colville, Wash.; 25 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
George Sleeman Spokane
Service for George T. Sleeman, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Sunset Mausoleum in Fairmount Memorial Park. Entombment will follow. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sleeman, who was born in Crozier, Ontario, died Tuesday.
He was a 44-year Spokane resident.
Mr. Sleeman was a machine operator for Kaiser and a member of United Steelworkers of America No. 329.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Sleeman; two daughters, Carol LeMay and Bonnie Olsen, both of Spokane; four brothers, Curtis, Wallace, Kenneth and Lloyd Sleeman; a sister, Jeanette Graves; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Albert Roullier Sr. Spokane
Service for Albert J. “Bert” Roullier, 76, will be at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Missoula, Mr. Roullier died Tuesday.
He lived in Spokane for 52 years and was a Methodist. His first wife, Lorene Roullier, died in 1959. His second wife, Mary Roullier, died in 1993. He is survived by three sons, Bill Tom, and Albert Roullier Jr.; a daughter, June Truax; three sisters, Vi Matt, June Ashley and Pearl Ashley; a brother, Henry Roullier; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Oleta Pointon Pullman
Service for Oleta Heustis Pointon, 65, is set for 10:30 a.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.
Mrs. Pointon died Tuesday at Moscow Care Center from cancer. She was born in Westville, Okla.
She moved to Helmer, Idaho, with her family in 1936 and then to Deary, Idaho, where she graduated from high school.
She graduated from Walla Walla Beauty College.
She operated Oleta’s Beauty Shop in Waitsburg, Wash., until 1963, when she moved to Palouse and opened Oleta’s Beauty Shop in the Comstock Building in Palouse. She operated the shop until 1994 and continued to work there until she retired earlier this year.
She married Thomas Pointon in 1971. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Pointon was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Kristie Olson of Pasco and Karen Johnston of Deer Park; five brothers, Chester Heustis of Potlatch, Idaho, Donald Heustis of St. Maries, Vernon Heustis of Clarkston, and Olliver and Kenneth Heustis, both of Bovill, Idaho; and six stepgrandchildren.
Guy Baxter Spokane
Memorial Mass for Guy A. Baxter, 79, is set for 11 a.m. today at St. Charles Catholic Church.
Mr. Baxter, who was born in Meyers Falls, Wash., died Thursday.
He had lived in Spokane for 42 years, and worked as a conductor for more than 40 years for Great Northern Railroad and later for Burlington Northern Railroad.
He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Indiana.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, St. Charles Catholic Parish and Eagles Lodge No. 2, where he was a Golden Eagle.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Pauline Baxter; two sons, Guy Baxter of Vancouver, Wash., and Paul Baxter of Spokane; three brothers, John Baxter of Seattle, George Baxter of Sacramento, Calif., and Art Baxter of Hawaii; a sister, Agnes Taylor of St. Maries; and two grandchildren.
Morris Milholland Greenacres
Service for Morris B. Milholland, 78, will be held today at 10 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will follow at noon at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Mr. Milholland, who was born in Kansas, died Tuesday.
He moved to the Inland Northwest 55 years ago and had lived in the Silver Valley and Coeur d’Alene area before settling in Spokane in 1962.
Mr. Milholland had worked as a mine hoist operator and construction millwright.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Spokane and American Legion Post No. 85. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, in 1991.
Survivors include three sons, Morris Milholland of Kansas, Alvin Milholland of Otis Orchards and Max Milholland of Spokane; one daughter, Delores Edwards of Greenacres; one sister, Bupha Slate of Kansas; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Henry Ruhl Spokane
Service for Henry John “Hank” Ruhl, 71, will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Portland, Mr. Ruhl died Monday. He worked as a miner for Asamera Minerals.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a rifleman with the 37th Infantry Division in the Philippines Southwest Division. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Chewelah, Wash.
Mr. Ruhl is survived by his wife of 16 years, Elizabeth Ruhl; a daughter, Sue Ringquist of Spokane; a son, John Ruhl of Moab, Utah; two sisters, Hope Douglas of Coeur d’Alene and Kaye Sharp of Kirkland, Wash.; six grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Michelle Hovater Spokane
Memorial service for Michelle E. Hovater, 21, will be at 3 p.m. today at the Sunset Mausoleum of Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born at Fairchild Air Force Base and died Tuesday in an automobile accident.
Ms. Hovater worked as a certified nurse’s assistant.
Survivors include her daughter, Micaela Hovater at home; her mother, Gloria Updike of Airway Heights; her father and stepmother, George and Chi Hovater of Sacramento, Calif.; her sister, Krystal Hovater of Airway Heights; her grandmothers, Gloria Harrison of Spokane and Martha Hovater of Anderson, Calif.; and her grandfather, Charles Harrison of Cusick, Wash.
Juanita Stuart Sandpoint
Memorial service for Juanita Blanche Stuart, 72, will be today at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stuart, who was born in Tensed, Idaho, died Tuesday.
She grew up and attended schools in Tensed, later graduating from high school in Cheney.
She moved to Sandpoint in 1967 and had worked in the dietary department of Bonner General Hospital, retiring in 1992. She was recently employed at the Panhandle Animal Shelter’s clothing store.
Mrs. Stuart was preceded in death by her husband, Bill.
Survivors include four children, William Stuart of Sandpoint, Luster Stuart of Spokane, Sandy Edlund of Kellogg and Sallie Berosik of Montana; one brother, Gerald Bailey of Spokane; three sisters, Patty Hunt, Frances Norton and Geraldine Banik, all of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jay Bliss Spokane
Graveside service for Jay G. Bliss, 82, will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bliss, who was born in Taver, Alberta, died Wednesday.
He was a 56-year Spokane County resident.
He was a welder and worked for Spokane County.
Mr. Bliss was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2, and he and his wife had been cooks for the Golden Eagles. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
His wife of 53 years, Virginia, preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Dwight Bliss of Spokane; a sister, Idonna Abenroth of Seattle; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Merrill Slagg Spokane
Memorial service for Merrill Daniel Slagg, 39, will be at 11 a.m. today at Fowler United Methodist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Slagg, who died Tuesday, was born in Spokane.
He graduated from Shadle Park High School and had worked at Pier 51 restaurant, the Main Sail restaurant and Sea Galley restaurant.
He graduated earlier this year from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in business.
He is survived by his parents, Maynard and Bertha Slagg of Spokane; three sisters, Maureen Corser of Bridgeport, Mich., and Michele Fleck and Mary Picken, both of Spokane; and two brothers, Maynard “Chuck” Slagg of Kent, Wash., and Mark Slagg of Flint, Mich.
Virginia Nash Spokane
Service for Virginia Nash, 70, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Inurnment will at a later date in Missouri. Mrs. Nash, who was born in Holcomb, Mo., was a 15-year Spokane resident. She died Tuesday.
She worked as a beautician.
She is survived by a daughter, Jan Danzig of Spokane; three sons, Tommy Nash of Denver, Randy Nash of Spokane and Steve Nash of Portland; three sisters, Margie Lawson, Sue Skerrett and Mary Templin; two brothers, Max and Charles Waddell; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Paul Martin Wilbur, Wash.
Memorial service for Paul B. Martin, 76, was Wednesday at Wilbur Lutheran Church. Burial service was at Sherman (Wash.) Church and Cemetery, north of Wilbur.
Mr. Martin, who died Sunday, was born in Sherman, Wash.
He was a wheat farmer and was a member of Wilbur Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Martin; two sons, Larry Martin of Wilbur and Randall Martin of Creston, Wash; a daughter, Paulette Korns of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Amanda Jensen of Wilbur and Bertha Heikkinen of Minneapolis; and five grandsons.
Rose Kaesemeyer Spokane
Funeral Mass for Rose M. Oliveri Kaesemeyer, 83, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kaesemeyer a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.
She was a cook at the Empire Restaurant for more than 20 years and at the Trio Restaurant for 10 years.
She is survived by her son, Frank Kaesemeyer of Spokane.
