Dupuis Wins Debut
Qualifier Anthony DuPuis of France upset seventh-seeded Nicklas Kulti of Sweden 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to highlight opening day at the $328,000 Infiniti Open men’s tennis tournament.
Ranked 382nd in the world and making his debut on the ATP Tour, DuPuis needed almost 2 hours to get “the biggest win I’ve ever had.”
In other first-round matches, Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman defeated Cristiano Caratti of Italy 6-2, 6-3; Martin Damm of the Czech Republic beat Morocco’s Hicham Arazi 6-4, 6-2; Guillaume Raoux of France stopped David Caldwell of Richmond, Va., 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; and Australian Patrick Rafter defeated Vince Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
