Obituaries

Daniel Mahoney Spokane

Memorial service for Daniel Crowley Mahoney, a retired Spokane attorney, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment.

Mr. Mahoney, who died Saturday at home, was 76.

He was born in Fairfield.

He attended Hill Military Academy in Portland and then the University of Oregon. He left the University of Oregon after the attack on Pearl Harbor and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was assigned to the 106th Reconnaissance Bombardier Squadron, 42nd Bombardment Group (M), and flew 58 missions piloting B-25s.

After the war, he returned to Oregon and finished his degree. He then graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law. He was recalled to active duty in 1950.

He held a position in the Pentagon office of the secretary of defense and retired in 1971 as a colonel.

He returned to Spokane with his family and opened a practice with Edward J. Crowley Sr., his second cousin. He also served as legal counsel for Expo ‘74.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Green) Mahoney; two sons, Daniel Mahoney Jr. and Mark Mahoney; and a grandson.

Lydia Yetter Spokane

Memorial service for Lydia H. Yetter, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hillyard Baptist Church. Riplinger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Yetter, who was born in Clayton, S.D., died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 51 years.

She was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church and Take Off Pounds Sensibly.

Her husband, Donald Yetter, died in 1992.

She is survived by three daughters, Sally Hixson and Susan Banik, both of Spokane, and Peggy Miller of Deer Park; three brothers, Art Baumiller of Spokane, Andrew Baumiller of Yuma, Ariz., and Edward Baumiller of Yakima; a sister, Katheryn Hutchenson of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Edward Grandinetti Spokane

Funeral Mass for Edward C. Grandinetti, 70, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Grandinetti, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He served in the Army during World War II, in the 69th Infantry Division and received the Purple Heart.

He worked as a mechanic at Ed’s Automotive.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474 and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a son, Monte Grandinetti of Spokane; two daughters, Cheryl Imler and Laurel Hanson, both of Spokane; two brothers, John and Robert Grandinetti, both of Spokane; two sisters, Fanny Lewis of Ephrata, Wash., and Julie Adams of Spokane; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Robert Nicholls Spokane

Memorial service for Robert D. Nicholls, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nicholls, a 60-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He was born in Jamestown, N.D.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was a body and fender worker in several shops in the Spokane area, including Watson Paint and Body. He retired from Watson in 1987.

Mr. Nicholls was a member of Machinists Union Local 942.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Lorraine; two sons, Burt of Spokane and Leo of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Vickie of Spokane; a brother, Gordon of Bellingham; three sisters, Lorraine Riddle and Eileen Gibson, both of Spokane, and Helen Moddemeyer of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Edith Mitchell Stanwood, Wash.

Graveside service for Edith E. Mitchell, a former Spokane resident, will be at 1 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery in Spokane. Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon, Wash., is is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mitchell, 81, died Friday in Stanwood, where she had lived for three years.

She was born in Sauk Rapids, Minn.

She married Robert Mitchell in St. Cloud, Minn., in 1935.

They settled in Spokane in 1946.

Mrs. Mitchell had also lived in Arizona and the Tri-Cities for a short time before moving to Stanwood.

She was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church in Spokane.

Her husband died in January.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn McAdams of Anacortes and Elaine Sleeman of Maple Valley, Wash.; three sisters, Helen Golumbeck of Illinois, Laura Ziebol of Minnesota and Marie Myers of Indiana; a brother, Walter Lease of Lopez Island, Wash.; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Agnes Adolfson Spokane

Family memorial service for Agnes M. Adolfson, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Adolfson died Saturday.

She married Gustaf Adolfson and they bought the York Avenue Grocery. They sold the store in 1945.

Her husband died in 1972.

Mrs. Adolfson worked for two working families, taking care of their children and cooking, for many years.

She is survived by a son, Robert Adolfson of Spokane; four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jack Crampton Spokane

No service will be held for John Joseph “Jack” Crampton, 81. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Joseph died July 20.

He worked as a mail carrier for the Postal Service and had served in the Navy.

He is survived by a brother, Ted Miller of Spokane.

Debora Martin Spokane

Visitation for Debora L. Martin, 34, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be private inurnment.

Mrs. Martin died Monday from cancer.

She was born in Moses Lake and graduated from high school there.

She moved to Spokane 11 years ago.

She was a member of Grace Harvest Fellowship.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Timothy; three sons, R.J., Michael and Daniel, all of Spokane; a sister, Kathy Faris of Pendleton, Ore.; and her parents, Richard and Teddy Kissinger of Moses Lake.

Lucille Salyer Spokane

Private service will be held for Lucille (Brown) Salyer, 58. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Salyer, born in Belfield, N.D., died Monday.

She married Fred Walla in 1957, and they lived in Sidney, Mont. In 1976 she married Richard Salyer, and they lived in Spokane.

Mrs. Salyer returned to Sidney, three months ago after living in Spokane for 35 years. Both husbands preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Steve and Kenneth Walla, both of Sidney; a brother, Ronald Kline of Pendleton, Ore.; a sister, Melvina “Tody” Goetzke of Minnesota; and a grandson.

Hazel (Ohlson) Callarman Spokane

Graveside service for Hazel (Ohlson) Callarman, 93, is planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mica Peak Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Covenant Christian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Callarman, who died Saturday, was born on the family farm at Mica Peak.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and, in 1922, married George Callarman.

During World War II she worked at Galena Army Air Depot. She also worked at The Crescent.

Her husband was a Spokane police officer and she was one of the founders of the Benevolent Order of Police Wives.

She was a member of Adelphi Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Retired Police Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 51 and Covenant Christian Church.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Koch of Spokane; a brother, Ben Ohlson of Seattle; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Christian Church.

Gladys (Way) Danielson Spokane

Burial service for Gladys (Way) Danielson, 98, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. A memorial reception will follow at 3 p.m. at Rockwood Manor. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Danielson, who was born in Watertown, S.D., died Friday.

A former Seattle resident, she had lived in Spokane since 1962.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Monica’s Guild, the Greater Gonzaga Guild and The Spokane Club.

Her husband, Harold Danielson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Doris Rumpeltes of Spokane; four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Robert ‘Mac’ McEwen Spokane

Funeral Mass for Robert Alan “Mac” McEwen, 85, was Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. McEwen, a 39-year Spokane resident, died Thursday.

He was born in Rockham, S.D., and had lived in Spokane for 39 years. He worked as sales manager for Holiday Sales.

Mr. McEwen was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge and the Happy Wheels RV Club.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Genevieve McEwen; a son, Bob McEwen of Spokane; a daughter, Mary Materne of Spokane; two brothers Charles and Thomas McEwen, both of Seattle; a sister, Mary Duling of Turlock, Calif.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Beulah Higgs Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Beulah L. Higgs, 77, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Grangeville (Idaho) Methodist Church. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Higgs, who was born in Grangeville, died Saturday.

She was a member of the Grangeville Methodist Church and served as past worthy matron of the Grangeville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edmund Briggs, in 1976.

Survivors include her husband, Arden; two sons, Monty Briggs of Pullman and Ron Briggs of Coeur d’Alene; one daughter, Cyndi Lucke of Spokane; two brothers, Vern Willey of Grangeville and Wayne Willey of Clarkston, Wash.; one sister, Eva Frey of Spokane; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
