County Will Petition For Special Prosecutor

Ken Olsen Staff Writer

The Idaho Attorney General’s Office likely will provide a special prosecutor to deal with charges that prominent local attorney Bob Brown molested his step-grandson.

Kootenai County Prosecutor Bill Douglas said he expects to petition the court next week to appoint the Attorney General’s office to the case. “The case needs to be handled by outside counsel because of my office’s personal friendship with Bob Brown and his family,” Douglas said.

Brown long has been active in civic affairs. He is a former city councilman, current chairman of the Democratic Party. Douglas also is a Democrat.

Brown won’t serve another term as chairman of Kootenai County’s Democratic Party. He has withdrawn his name from balloting for 1996-97 county party officers. Those elections take place Monday at the Democratic Central Committee’s meeting in Coeur d’Alene.

Investigators arrested Brown at his Hayden Lake home Thursday morning and booked him into Kootenai County Jail on one count of lewd conduct with a minor. He was released on his own recognizance.

Brown admitted having oral sex with his 14-year-old step-grandson when he was arrested, authorities said.
