College World Series

Miami scored three runs in the first inning against Kris Benson, college baseball’s top player, and tallied the deciding run on a Clemson outfielder’s mental lapse as the Hurricanes beat Clemson 7-3 Friday night in the College World Series.

Benson (14-1), Baseball America’s player of the year who is considered the consensus No. 1 choice in next week’s major league baseball draft, sustained his first loss in more than a year.

The win moves No. 5 seed Miami (48-13) to the second round Sunday afternoon to meet top-seeded Alabama (50-17), a 7-5 winner over Oklahoma State earlier. Fourth-seeded Clemson (49-16) meets OSU (45-20) in an elimination game Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, Chris Moller’s three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth rallied Alabama past OSU.
