Welsh Students Protest Queen’s Visit

Compiled From Wire Services

A throng of anti-monarchist students brought a halt to Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to their campus on Friday.

Fifty police at Aberystwyth University were unable to control 200 noisy Welsh-language students protesting the queen’s visit and attempting to halt her motorcade.

As the cars entered the campus, four young men climbed over barriers, but police kept them away from the queen’s vehicle.

The queen seemed unperturbed by the demonstration and continued smiling and waving at other sections of the crowd.

A group of young activists at Aberystwyth is pushing for wider use of the language. They and the Welsh Language Society had criticized the queen’s visit.
