Kathryn (Gosselin) Holt Cannon Beach, Ore.

No service will be held for Kathryn Ann “Katy” (Gosselin) Holt, 53. Hughes-Ransom Mortuary in Seaside, Ore., is in charge of cremation and arrangements.

Born in Butte, Mont., Mrs. Holt died Saturday at home.

She lived in Spokane for 24 years and was a homemaker. She moved to Cannon Beach three years ago.

She is survived by son, Steven Dean of Cannon Beach; daughter, Shawna Richardson of Mount Vernon, Ore.; and one grandson.

Hermon Joyner Sr. Spokane

Service for Herman P. Joyner Sr., 80, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sunset Baptist Church, with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Morton, Miss., Mr. Joyner died Sunday.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1945.

In 1948, he enlisted in the Air Force and retired in 1972 as a master sergeant. He had lived in Spokane since 1969.

In 1972 he went to work at Alloy Trailers Co., in Spokane, as a welder. He retired in 1981.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jannie Joyner; sons, Carl Joyner of San Jose, Calif., and Hermon Joyner Jr., of Spokane; daughter, Sheila Hammiller of Olney, Md.; sisters, Dollie Bynum of Trinity, Texas, Sue Myers of Lake, Miss., and Audrey Denton of Morton, Miss.; brother, Donald Joyner of Garland, Texas; and three grandchildren Memorial contributions may be made to Sunset Baptist Church.

Marjorie Pitner Spokane

Memorial service for Marjorie J. Pitner, 70, will be at 7 p.m. today at Moran United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is charge of cremation.

Mrs. Pitner, who died Monday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

She worked as a library assistant for Spokane Public Library at the downtown branch for 25 years, and retired in 1986.

She was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church, Moran Prairie Grange, Moran Ladies Aid, Moran Fair Association, Eastern Washington Genealogical Society and the Nature Conservancy.

Her husband, Fred Pitner, died in 1992.

She is survived by daughter, Kathleen Cahill of Spokane.

Alma Werttemberger Ritzville, Wash.

Service for Alma Werttemberger, 95, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Entombment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane.

Miss Werttemberger, a lifetime Ritzville resident, died Sunday.

She graduated from Ritzville High School.

Her mother died when she was 11 and she took care of her father and four brothers.

She was a member of the Gritman Senior Center and the C.J. Newland American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 51.

Survivors include a niece, Joyce Jolley of Bellevue, Wash.; and nephew, Richard Werttemberger of Langley, Wash.

Virginia Kent Spokane

Graveside service for Virginia C. Kent, 66, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Moran Prairie Cemetery. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kent, who was born in Seattle, died Monday.

She worked for Spokane School District 81 as a cook for 30 years.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Kent; daughters, Karen Kent of Auburn, Wash., and Denise Loften of Yakima; son, Michael Kent of Spokane; sister, Arline Buxton of Tonasket, Wash.; brothers, Don McAninch of Maine, George McAninch of New York and Doug McAninch of Minnesota; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Carol Ruth Spokane

Graveside service for Carol Ann Ruth, 47, is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, at LaCrosse (Wash.) Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth, who was born in Port Angeles, Wash., died Sunday.

She was a 10-year resident of Spokane and Elk and worked as a waitress.

She is survived by her companion, James Embler; daughters, Annette Stoddard of Spokane, and Sarah and Angela Ruth, both of Elk; sons, Kelly Burkhart of Spokane and Kevin Burkhart of Lacey, Wash.; her mother, Irene Simmons of Olympia; sisters, JoAnn Messersmith and Jean Tissdale, both of Sprague, Wash., and Sharon Bodine of Olympia; brothers, Gerald Simmons of Portland, Charles Simmons of Lewiston and Roger Olsen of Portland; and 10 grandchildren.

Alice Alfstad Spokane

Service for Alice B. Alfstad, 76, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Alfstad, who died Sunday, was born in Sheridan, Wyo.

She graduated from Eastern Washington State College with a bachelor’s degree in education and taught first grade for 21 years at Franklin Elementary. She had lived in Spokane for 54 years.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Chi Omega and the Ding-A-Lings, a ceramics group.

Her first husband, Eldon Ransom, died in 1972. She later married William Alfstad, who died in 1982.

She is survived by son, Richard Ransom of Sacramento, Calif.; daughters, Sheryl Gross of Bridgeport, Wash., and Christine Phillips of Renton, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Clement Miller Spokane

A chance to visit relatives of Clement Miller, 88, is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Cremation was held.

Mr. Miller, a retired attorney for the Federal Land Bank, died Saturday. He was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

He passed the Montana bar exam in 1931 and entered into private practice in Montana. He served in World War II and, following the war, received a law degree from the University of Montana. He joined the Federal Land Bank in 1946 and retired in 1973.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Natalie; and son, Steven Miller of Arlington, Va.

Elizabeth Schadegg Cheney

Graveside service for Elizabeth “Betty” Schadegg, 79, will be at 10 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Cheney United Church of Christ. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schadegg, who died Saturday, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was a Cheney resident since 1947 and worked as a librarian for several years at the Cheney Library.

Her husband, Francis Schadegg, died in 1992.

She is survived by daughters, Kay Booth of Germany and Mary Hair of Cheney; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Vivian Nechanicky Spokane

Service for Vivian N. Nechanicky, 78, is set for 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nechanicky died Sunday. She was born in Dawson County, Mont.

She graduated from North Central High School and had lived in Spokane for 68 years.

She was a co-owner and operator of the Automatic Canteen Company of Spokane for 45 years.

She also was involved in square dancing and other dance clubs.

Mrs. Nechanicky is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard Nechanicky; son, Robert Nechanicky of Veradale; daughter, Carol Aiken of Bellevue, Wash.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association of Washington or the American Red Cross.

Robert Winey Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Vigil service for Robert Winey, 69, will be at 5 p.m. today at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Valley, Wash. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Jump Off Joe, Wash. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Winey died Saturday. He was born in Vale, S.D.

He served in the merchant marine during World War II. He worked as a roofer, carpenter and logger. He spent the winters in Arizona.

Survivors include brothers, James Winey of Anchorage, Alaska, and Francis Winey of Bonners Ferry; and sister, Mary Hinchliff of Chewelah.

Roxanne Pierce Spokane

Funeral Mass for Roxanne T. Pierce, 41, is set for 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Hennessey-Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Pierce died Sunday.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Spokane Freightliner for the past 13 years.

She is survived by two sons, Brian and Jeff Pierce, both of Spokane; parents, Joseph and Olga Ovnicek of Spokane; and brother Kenneth Ovnicek of Veradale.
