Rankin To Talk About Assessment Appeals

From Staff And Wire Reports

Tax watchdog Ron Rankin and his property owners group will teach interested residents how to appeal their property assessments at a special meeting tonight.

Rankin, a Republican candidate for Kootenai County commissioner and the author of a 1 percent initiative capping property taxes, will host a class on appeals at 7 p.m. at City Hall in Post Falls.

“We don’t expect as many as last year, but there are still a lot of people out there needing help,” he said.

Last year, a few hundred people showed up at a similar coaching session. More than 900 actually filed assessment appeals that year.

This year, about 250 people have picked up a form needed for an appeal. Rankin said the form is convoluted and difficult to understand.

“The way it’s designed it really spooks a person and makes them say ‘Ah, I don’t want to do it,”’ Rankin said.

The deadline to file appeals this year is June 24. , DataTimes MEMO: Cut in Spokane edition
