Area Residents Recognized At African-American Day
Six Inland Northwest residents were honored at the first African-American Recognition Day at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park.
The recipients and their areas of concern are:
Education: Gloria Morris, the first African-American principal in Spokane School District 81. Business: F.A. Stokes, entrepreneur, civic leader and founding father. Services: Eleanor Chase, civic leader. Humanitarian Award: the Rev. C.E. Hamp, Sr., pastor of the Full Gospel Mission for All Nations Inc. Special Recognition: Mel Carter, who was involved in the vision of the Libby Teen Center.
Vernon Baker, St. Maries, was also honored as one of seven black American soldiers to be awarded a Medal of Honor for his service in World War II.
Jacob Schmidt, Colbert, was honored for his academic achievements as an economics major during the annual Honors Convocation at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa.
Schmidt received the Todd L. Romig Memorial Prize, presented to a junior who most exemplifies the true characteristics of the scholar-athlete.
He is the son of Errol and Robin Schmidt and a graduate of Mead High School.
Shelly Bartlett, daughter of Bob and Nina Bartlett, Spokane, was initiated into the Black Masque Chapter of Mortar Board, a national honor society. She is a junior majoring in social sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Joseph Stephen Elias, a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, received a $915 Keith Kelly Memorial Scholarship for students preparing for careers in radio or television.
As a junior radio-TV major at Eastern Washington University, Elias has been a deejay and promotions director of KEWU radio and host of the weekly cable access program “You’re in Good Company.”
He is the son of Cecilia and Stephen Elias, Spokane,
Brenda Murphy, Deer Park, received a $1,470 Harry and Alice Kegel Scholarship for meritorious students majoring in education.
Murphy, a junior accounting and education major at Eastern Washington University, is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and EWU’s honors program.
She is a 1993 graduate of Deer Park High School and the daughter of Rosemary and Clifford Murphy of Clayton, Wash.
Kelly Bureta, Spokane, received a $658 Lloyd and Thekla Rowles Memorial Scholarship. This is the third year she has received the scholarship.
Bureta, a 1992 graduate of Cheney High School, is a vocal performance/music education major at Eastern Washington University and a member of the EWU Collegians’ vocal performance group.
She is the daughter of Peggy Bureta and Robert Bureta, both of Spokane.
