Cda Residents Complete Army Basic Training

Army Pvt. John E. Carlson and Army Reserve Pvt. Judson L. Gridley have completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Both received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, first aid, and military justice, courtesy, history and traditions.

Carlson, son of Terry and Laurie Carlson of Coeur d’Alene, is a 1995 Lake City High School graduate.

Gridley, son of Lujenne R. Swanson of Coeur d’Alene and David Gridley of Meridian, Idaho, is a 1995 graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Calvin W. Smith, son of Barbara and Calvin Smith of Rathdrum, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

Smith, a 1985 graduate of Reardan (Wash.) High School, was cited for his initiative in making a significant contribution to the accomplishment of the command’s mission and superior performance of duty while serving with Command Element, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The University of Idaho School of Communications’ student advertising team retained its title as regional champion in May in the American Advertising Federation’s District XI student competition held in Yakima.

The team defeated eight other regional schools and moved on to represent the Pacific Northwest in the collegiate World Series of Advertising earlier this month.

Local team members are: Angela Sawyer of Potlatch, Idaho, and Jenny Jordan, of Osburn, Idaho. Professor Mark Sacrist served as the faculty adviser.
