Hot-Hitting Hundley Leads Mets To Win Over Braves

Associated Press

National League

Todd Hundley homered from both sides of the plate, singled twice and had five RBIs in the New York Mets’ 8-3 victory over the visiting Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Hundley, who hit his first homer right-handed and his second left-handed, boosted his season total to 16, tying his career high set in 1994. In his last seven games, Hundley is 14 for 25 (.560), with four homers and 14 RBIs.

Bobby Jones (6-2), who scattered 12 hits and no runs in 7-1/3 innings, was the winner.

The game was marred by a bench-clearing incident in the top of the fifth inning. Losing pitcher Steve Avery (6-5) and Hundley exchanged words after second baseman Jose Vizcaino was hit on the right kneecap by the Atlanta pitcher.

Cubs 2, Phillies 1 Philadelphia

Doug Glanville and Terry Shumpert got their first N.L. RBIs and Jaime Navarro pitched a three-hitter, leading Chicago past Philadelphia.

Marlins 5, Expos 2 Montreal

Devon White singled in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning and Greg Colbrunn homered and drove in three runs, lifting Florida over Montreal.

Astros 10, Rockies 9 Denver

Sean Berry homered and drove in three runs to support undefeated Donne Wall as Houston won a rare game in Colorado.

Wall (3-0) allowed five runs on eight hits with no walks in eight innings.

The Rockies scored four runs after two outs in the ninth, but the rally fell one run short with the bases loaded.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 Los Angeles

Delino DeShields set up one run with two stolen bases and drove in another with a sacrifice fly as Los Angeles beat St. Louis behind emergency starter Chan Ho Park.

The Dodgers allowed St. Louis just three hits for their third one-run victory in three days.

Park (4-2) earned the victory in his first start since May 8, allowing one run and one hit in five innings, with five walks and six strikeouts.

Pirates 5, Giants 4 San Francisco

Jason Kendall singled home the winning run in the eighth inning as Pittsburgh beat San Francisco for its eighth win in nine games.

With the score tied 4-4, Orlando Merced drew a leadoff walk in the eighth off Rich DeLucia (2-2) and went to second on a wild pitch. DeLucia got two outs before Kendall blooped a hit over the head of shortstop Shawon Dunston to score the game-winner.

Reds 6, Padres 3 San Diego

Eric Davis, who came off the disabled list earlier in the day, scored the go-ahead run in a four-run eighth inning on a wild pitch by Doug Bochtler, and Cincinnati defeated slumping San Diego.

The Reds’ rally was aided by two wild pitches and three walks by Bochtler (0-2). Thomas Howard had a two-run single, and another run scored on Eddie Taubensee’s infield hit.

Clearing the bases

Danny Darwin, who pitched 16 scoreless innings and won two games for Pittsburgh, was named the National League player of the week. He allowed 10 hits and no walks while striking out six. One of the wins, over Los Angeles, gave Pirates manager Jim Leyland his 800th victory… . The Reds activated outfielder Eric Davis and put outfielder Reggie Sanders on the 15-day disabled list with a sore rib cage… . Cardinals closer Dennis Eckersley, out since May 19 with inflamation in his right elbow, felt fine after throwing 40 pitches Monday and will come off the disabled list on Thursday.
