Lawyer Denies Charges

Associated Press

Wesley S. Spears, the lawyer being investigated for allegedly trying to blackmail Marcus Camby into hiring him as an agent, is denying a claim that he threatened the basketball player’s mother.

Camby and his agent, James Bryant of ProServ, have said Spears had legal papers delivered to Camby’s home last month.

Spears is being investigated by state prosecutors who are trying to determine if he attempted to blackmail Camby by threatening to go public about gifts he had given the former Massachusetts star center.

Bryant has said the approach to Camby’s mother prompted him to contact the NBA Players Association days before the story became public, and led to Camby’s blackmail complaint to state prosecutors.

Bryant has not disclosed the contents of the papers. He said last week they were delivered by Spears and that Janice Camby was told that, if her son refused to cooperate, Spears would go public about the gifts.
