Obituaries

Glenda Oien Spokane

Memorial service for Glenda A, Oien, 56, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of the Nazarene. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Oien died Friday after an automobile accident. She was born in Seattle.

She was a longtime Spokane resident and had worked as a secretary at Deer Park Junior High School for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Spokane Police Lt. Jerry Oien; one daughter, Jeralyn Oien of Seattle; two sons, Jay and Shane Oien, both of Spokane; her mother, Evelyn Ginnold of Spokane; one brother, Dick Ginnold of Eugene, Ore.; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Glenda Oien Memorial Fund in care of Seafirst Bank in Deer Park, to benefit the computer lab program at the school.

Clarence Finch Spokane

Funeral service for Clarence Merle Finch, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Finch, who died Friday, was born in Judith Gap, Mont.

He was a former 46-year Hayden Lake, Idaho, resident, and had lived in Spokane for five years.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School.

Mr. Finch worked in the Todd Shipyard in Seattle building destroyers during World War II and also worked for Northwest Timber as a millwright for 25 years. He retired in 1979.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge.

His first wife, Vergene, died in 1965.

He and his wife, Helena, who survives him, would have celebrated 30 years of marriage on Monday.

He is also survived by three John Finch of Chula Vista, Calif., David Finch of Sumner, Wash., and Michael Ramsey of Drain, Ore.; two daughters Claudia Dineen of Oceanside, Calif., and Sally Jo Flage of Martinez, Calif.; one brother Raymond Finch; four sisters Thelma Klein, Betty Seivers, Beverly Stokes and Marilyn Wood; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.

John Schmidt Spokane

Visitation for John S. Schmidt, 64, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Cimarron, Kan., Mr. Schmidt died Friday.

He served in the Army in Europe from 1951 to 1953.

He moved to Spokane in 1956 and worked at Inland Empire Paper Co. from 1956 to 1958. He operated a Signal service station from 1958 to 1965 and then worked for Schindler-Houghton Elevator Co. as a technician for 23 years.

Mr. Schmidt retired in 1988.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Ann Schmidt; two sons, Steven Schmidt of Billings, Mont., and Gary Schmidt of Spokane; one daughter, Shari Miller of Spokane; one brother, Charles Schmidt of Ensign, Kan.; one sister, Terri Wright of Elkhurst, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of the Nazarene.

Harry Fletcher Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Harry Fletcher, 83, will be today at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Fletcher, who was born in Swanswa, Wales, died Saturday.

He moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, from Wales in 1923 and to the Spokane Valley in 1955. He settled in Coeur d’Alene in 1963.

He worked in retail sales at Montgomery Ward in Coeur d’Alene for 10 years, later working for Runge Furniture before retiring in 1973.

Mr. Fletcher was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge No. 486 and served as past president.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; five daughters, June Chalich and Joan Allen, both of Spokane, Dena Fletcher of Arizona, and Dixie Enders and Bonnie Haycraft, both of Coeur d’Alene; one brother, George Fletcher; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Darlene McCormick Sandpoint

Service for Darlene Marie McCormick, 34, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Sandpoint. Interment will follow at Seneacquoteen Cemetery near Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCormick, who was born in Reno, Nev., died Saturday in an automobile accident near Wrencoe, Idaho, near Sandpoint.

She attended school in Priest River and had lived in Loon Lake, Wash., before moving to the HooDoo Valley near Sandpoint in 1970.

Mrs. McCormick had worked as lead seamer for Oberdorfer Industries and also for the Idaho State Employment Agency.

Survivors include her husband, Cory; one son, Shea of Sandpoint; three stepchildren, Sarai McCormick and Justin McCormick, both of Sandpoint, and Stormy Tucker of Oldtown, Idaho; her mother, Irene Wherly of Priest River; her father, Lester Dingus of Big Pine Key, Fla.; one sister, Denise Hollingshead of Challis, Idaho; one half-brother, Robert of Pennsylvania; and five half-sisters, Jackie of Spokane, Robin of Virginia, Debbie and Rickie, both of Florida, and Leslie of Priest River.

Vera Brannan Colfax, Wash.

Service for Vera Brannan, 94, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Colfax. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brannan died Friday. She was born in Egbert, Ontario.

She moved to Veradale with her family as a child and graduated from high school in Veradale.

She married Frederick Brannan in Spokane in 1921. They lived in the Ewartsville and Oncheo, Wash., areas, where they farmed.

They retired in 1958 and moved into Colfax. Her husband of 57 years died in 1978.

Mrs. Brannan was a member of First Baptist Church, the Grandmothers Club and the Ewartsville Grange.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene “Scooter” Brannan of Colfax and Harlan Brannan of Rathdrum, Idaho; two daughters, Maxine Hodge and Dorothy Harris, both of Colfax; two brothers, Wilfred and Stanley Shaw, both of Bridgeport, Wash.; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Health and Hospice of Southeastern Washington or First Baptist Church of Colfax.

Mark Planovsky Mead

Private family service for Mark J. Planovsky, 84, will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Planovsky, who died Thursday, was born in Czechoslovakia.

He served in the Army during World War II and received the Good Conduct and Victory medals.

He worked for the Army and Air Force civil service departments in photographic electronics and for Gordon Enterprises of Hollywood, Calif. He retired in the mid 1970s.

He had lived in Spokane for seven years and in Mead for four.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Colbert.

Mr. Planovsky’s survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Planovsky of Mead; four daughters, Caroline Fisher of Ohio, Marsha Law of Arizona, Sue Patterson of Alaska and Karen Evans of California; five sons, Eugene and Gerald Planovsky, both of Ohio, Ronald and Jon Planovsky, both of California, and Kenneth Planovsky of Utah; five sisters, Mary Palider, Irene Kula and Anna Planovsky, all of Ohio, Cathy Pinter of California and Helen Gaukin of New York; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Roberta ‘Robin’ McGuire Spokane

Service for Roberta J. “Robin” McGuire, 52, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. McGuire, who was born in Toppenish, Wash., died Thursday.

She graduated from high school in Grandview, Wash., and had lived in Spokane since 1967.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the Sunshine Dairy and the Sharp Shooting Range.

Mrs. McGuire was a member of St. Davids’ Episcopal Church.

She is survived by a son, Christopher McGuire of Issaquah, Wash.; her mother, Hazel Peace of Spokane; and a sister, Tibby Coffee of Amherst, N.H.

Bertha (Gumz) Fieser Fairfield

Service for Bertha (Gumz) Fieser, 99, was last Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield. Burial was at Rosewood Cemetery in Fairfleid.

Born in Sigel, Wis., Mrs. Fieser died June 1. She moved to the Spokane area in 1911 with her family.

Mrs. Fieser had worked for the True Blue Biscuit Co., Clubertson Department Store, and the Inland Empire Pea Growers Association, and as a telephone operator for six years in Fairfield.

She married Arthur Fieser in 1936 in Spokane.

She and her husband farmed in the Fairfield area. He died in 1957.

Survivors include grandchildren Randy Fieser of Fairfield, Debra Estey of the Spokane Valley and Scott Fieser of Spokane; and four great-grandchildren.

Ivan Wise LaCrosse, Wash.

Graveside service for Ivan Cecil Wise, 90, is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at LaCrosse City Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wise, who was born in Hay, Wash., died Friday.

He graduated from high school in Hay and married Florence Holmes in Spokane in 1930. He was a farmer and retired in 1956.

After he retired he moved to LaCrosse and worked for the city of LaCrosse. He retired from that position in 1970 and worked part time for the grain growers association.

He was a life member of the Colfax Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Wise is survived by his wife; one son, Gerald Wise of LaCrosse; one brother, Fred Wise of California; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaCrosse Centennial Fund.

Monica Fischer Spokane

Funeral Mass for Monica Fischer, 89, will be Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin, N.D. Burial will also be in North Dakota.

Born in Glen Ullin, Mrs. Fischer died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane since 1976 and was a homemaker.

In 1926 she married Ralph Fischer in Glen Ullin. He died in 1974.

She is survived by three sons Lawrence and Anton Fischer, both of Spokane, and Richard Fischer of Prior Lake, Minn.; two daughters, Gladys Hall of Spokane and Marlys Swenson of Hutchinson, Minn.; two sisters, Betty Andersen and Madalein Archuletta, both of Santa Maria, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Harmon ‘Buster’ Dillon Spokane

Graveside service for Harmon A. “Buster” Dillon, 78, will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dillon, who was born in Rolla, N.D., died Friday.

He married Irene Gendron in 1940, and they moved to Spokane in 1954.

He retired from Kaiser Aluminum in Mead.

Mr. Dillon was a resident of Mount Spokane and was involved in the creation and development of the Mount Spokane Fire Department.

His wife, Irene, died in 1985.

He is survived by two sons Ronald and Robert Dillon, both of Mead; two daughters, Betty Dethloff of Mead and Mary Hubert of Metaline Falls, Wash.; three sisters, Agnus Funk of Spokane, Mary Johnson of North Dakota and Margaret Scholtis of Alameda, Calif.; one brother, Bob Dillon of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Arthur Woodley Fairfield

Memorial service for Arthur Hal Woodley, 71, was Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Fairfield.

Mr. Woodley, who died Thursday, was born in El Paso, Texas.

He retired from the El Paso Police Department in 1978 after 23 years.

He lived in Spokane County for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Woodley; three daughters, Patricia Loweree of Greenacres, Carol Russell of Stevensville, Mont., and Miriam Woodley at home; four sons Mike and Steve Woodley, both of Granbury, Texas, John Woodley of Cheney, and Joe Woodley at home; one brother Jack Woodley of Tiplersville, Miss.; three sisters, Nancy Hoben of Renton, Wash., Kathy Teel of El Paso and Sally Jones of Bryan, Texas; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
