Pac-10 Goes High Tech

Associated Press

The Pacific-10 Conference has agreed to buy basketball game timing systems from a North Carolina-based company, a move that could encourage other leagues to purchase the high-tech equipment.

The agreement with the Pac-10 is a major coup for Precision Time Systems president and former NBA referee Mike Costabile, whose system was rejected by the Atlantic Coast Conference just weeks ago despite unanimous approval by the league’s basketball coaches.

The Pac-10 plans to use the system for both men’s and women’s basketball games during the 1996-97 season.

The system, which eliminates reaction time lost by clock operators, was approved for use in NCAA basketball competition May 2. Officials wear wireless receivers on their belts. When any official blows a whistle, a signal is transmitted stopping the clock at the speed of light. Costabile estimates the device can save more than 1 minute of lost game time.
