WSU Announces Recipients Of Five Professorships

The Washington State University College of Liberal Arts announced recipients of five professorships.

The Boeing Co. Distinguished Professorship in Environmental Sociology was awarded to Riley Dunlap in recognition of his role in establishing the Department of Sociology at WSU. He has been president of the Research Committee on Environment and Society of the International Sociological Association, chair of the Natural Resources Group of the Rural Sociological Society, and chair of the Section on Environmental Sociology of the American Sociological Association. He was recently appointed a fellow at the George H. Gallup International Institute, where he served as project director of a comprehensive worldwide survey of environmental attitudes.

The Lester and Bernice Smith Distinguished Professorship in Mass Media Management had been filled for the past year by Fred Davis. He has been invited to continue as the Smith professor for a second year.

Three Edward R. Meyer Professorships were also announced. The recipient of the Meyer Professorship in History was John Kicza. Kicza’s work has contributed to the study and teaching of international affairs and world civilizations, especially Latin America. He has received Fulbright and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships and has published articles in top journals in his field.

Joan Burbick, an authority on American studies, is the recipient of the Meyer Professorship in English. Her books on Thoreau and 19th-century medicine and health issues are widely cited, and she has won the award for the outstanding article in the Journal of American Literature. She has served as president of the Pacific Northwest American Studies Association and worked with the Idaho Humanities Council.

The Meyer Professorship in Natural Resources and Government Policy went to Eugene Rosa. Rosa’s investigations have been in the areas of biosociology, energy, technology and risk, including the relationships between energy consumption, economic growth and societal welfare. He has contributed to the formulation of national energy policies through his invited participation in two National Academy of Science workshops on global change.

Heron Baumgarten of Jefferson Elementary School was an award winner in the K-6 category in the Diversity and Equity Awards.

Sandra S. Lee received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of medical anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. Lee, a 1988 honor graduate of Stanford University and a 1984 graduate of St. George’s School, is the daughter of Hi and Sun Lee.
