Former Knight Hired As Shadle Wrestling Coach
East Valley graduate and instructor Mark Miller has been hired to teach and coach wrestling at Shadle Park High School.
Miller, 26, graduated from EV in 1988 and is son of former Knight coach Chuck Miller.
He was hired at Shadle last week to replace interim coach Bill Saye and fill the need for an in-building coach.
Miller will teach economics and Pacific Northwest history and also coach freshman football.
“I’ve developed a style from four different head coaches if you include my dad,” said Shadle’s new coach.”We will wrestle on our feet and work on basics a lot.”
A 1993 graduate of Washington State University, he was hired to teach full time at EV last year and assisted Craig Hanson and previous Knight wrestling coach Mark Perry.
His father was a successful head coach at both West and East Valley schools for more than 30 years before retiring in 1994.
District 7 sportsmen
Valley Christian School received the District 7 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Sportsmanship Award for 1996.
The award was based on voting by all District 7 schools following each season’s sport. Valley Christian is a member of the Bi-County B League.
Valley Baseball begins Giant year
Spokane Valley Baseball League season began for the newly named Giant Division for 13- and 14-year-olds.
The league’s upper division dropped its Pony League affiliation this year. Thus, the new name.
Five teams began the year with a pair of wins.
In the American Division, Leo’s Photography and Jim Frazier’s Pro and Trophy Shop began unbeaten.
The former outscored two foes 34-4 and the latter handed Valley Electric its first loss, 9-6.
In the National Division Greenacres Gypsum outscored two teams 31-3, Spokane Olympic Sports won twice by a 40-9 total and Les Schwab Tire won twice by a 42-3 total.
Leo’s Jared Vlahovich had seven hits in the two wins, including a pair of triples. Simon Doi pitched a two-hit nine-strikeout shutout over Autocraft and also had three hits.
Greenacres Gypsum pitcher Kyle Boast pitched a one-hit shutout for four innings, struck out six and had two hits.
In Valley Electric’s initial two wins, Jeff Luedtke had four hits, including two doubles and a grand slam home run for seven runs batted in.
Happy Hatter’s Mike Hawkins beat Autocraft with a three-run double in the fifth inning. And George Velis DDS won 11-10 on Cameron Lovinger’s single in the bottom of the seventh.
Busy week for Midgets
Midget League teams for 11- and 12-year-olds played as many as three games to open the season.
Ashco Insurance in the American Division, Ethan Allen and Norma’s Burger Barn all won in triplicate.
Ethan Allen got strong pitching from Kyle Erwart who had an eightstrikeout and six-strikeout performance. He also was joined by two others in a 13-strikeout effort.
Chad Koehler hit two home runs and James Torrey had three doubles.
James Haile struck out 16 and allowed one hit in eight innings for Norma’s Burger Barn.
Elsewhere, five teams went 2-1 and another is 2-0.
Pitchers Matt Lidenberg and Chris Wiberg struck out 17 of 21 batters for Olympic Sports in a 6-3 win. Lidenberg fanned all four in his fourinning performance.
But the team lost to Medicine Shoppe on six straight seventh-inning singles, Rocky Delaurentis driving in the winning run. Teammate Ross Brower went 3-for-3 in a win a game later.
Food Rainbow’s Brandon Newbill allowed no hits and struck out seven and Joey Nowels went 3-for-4 to drive in four runs during victory.
Despite a loss, three pitchers for Norma’s Burger Express of Broadway fanned 21 batters in eight innings. They walked 14.
Broadway Eyecare Center’s K.C. Little and John Roschko were each 3-for-4, scored three runs and hit a double in one game.
Quintet unbeaten in Pee Wees
Five Pee Wee League teams, four in the American Division, won their initial two games last week.
Norma’s Burger Barn won by a combined 36-6 score, Brian Danelo striking out 14 and allowing three hits in six innings.
The team hit seven home runs, three by Scott Anderson and a grand slam by Kenny Zachow.
Jim Psomas DDS had one close encounter and won another with clout. Barret Stintzi singled in Jeremy Montang during a 5-4 win over Dave’s Grill. The team had six home runs in its 24-5 victory.
Dr. DeCounter allowed runs in only two innings of its two victories, Michael Hernandez striking out 12 and allowing two hits in six innings.
James Edwards hit a grand slam home run during an eight-run first inning of its season opener. Tony Richardson and Eain Smith had two-run triples in game two.
A nine-run fourth inning saved Action Charter during a 12-11 win over Norma’s Burger Opportunity. Tyler Hauschildhad two hits and three RBIs.
Neurosurgery Assoc. got five shutout innings by Matthew Johnston, who struck out 14 of 15 batters and allowed two hits. Jeremy Cline hit two home runs and drove in six runs in one game and had two doubles in the other.
Casey Whitehead’s two-run double won for Screen Tek, 11-10 over Olympic Sports.
Pitchers Mitch Lawler and Justin McMillen of Norma’s Burger Greenacres combined for 16 strikeouts during a win over CXT, whose pitcher David Hicks fanned eight in three no-hit innings.
