Wallach’s Blasts Help Angels Top K.C.

Tim Wallach tied the score in the eighth inning with a solo homer off Jeff Montgomery, then homered off Montgomery leading off the 10th to lift California to a 4-3 victory Wednesday, giving the Angels their first three-game sweep in Kansas City in five years.
Chuck McElroy went 1-2/3 innings and got his third straight victory in relief. He went two-thirds of an inning Monday and 1-2/3 innings on Tuesday night. Troy Percival worked the ninth for his 16th save as the Angels’ won their fourth straight.
Wallach hit the first pitch from Montgomery (1-4) leading off the eighth for a home run, forging a 3-3 tie.

Carlos Delgado hit a three-run homer and Marty Janzen scattered eight hits over seven innings as Toronto snapped a six-game losing streak with a win against New York.
The Blue Jays beat New York for just the second time in 18 games.

Brent Gates’ three-run double broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth inning and helped lift Oakland over Cleveland.
Clearing the bases
California acquired pitcher Rich Monteleone from the New York Yankees for outfielder Mike Aldrete. Monteleone, 33, was 4-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 21 appearances with Triple-A Columbus. Aldrete, 35, hit .150 with three home runs and eight RBIs for California this year. … Despite a vigorous promotion campaign, there could be thousands of empty seats at Kansas City’s stadium when Cal Ripken is expected to break Sachio Kinugasa’s world record for consecutive games played.
