IndyCar points leader Jimmy Vasser is being monitored for an inner-ear condition created by an accident last week during practice for the Detroit Grand Prix. Vasser leads the PPG IndyCar World Series by 23 points over Michael Andretti, who won Sunday’s race at Detroit. … At Ancaster, Ontario, Larry Mowry shot a 4-under-par 66 on for a one-stroke lead in the opening round of the Canadian Senior Open. … John Winkin, 77, who led Maine to the College World Series six times but struggled for success in recent years, was fired on Thursday. A college coach for 42 years, Winkin had a 642-430-3 record at Maine and an overall mark of 934-670-11.
