Mechanical Engineers Elect Richard Crain As Fellow

Richard Crain, an engineering professor at Washington State University, has been elected as a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Crane, who has been teaching for 31 years, received WSU’s Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award in Instruction and for the second year was a national finalist as a Boeing Outstanding Educator.

He is co-chairman of the university’s faculty-staff campaign to raise private funds from the employees; he is also executive secretary of the faculty senate.

Jeri Giachetti and Linda Takami, teachers with Spokane School District 81, have been selected to participate in a federally funded project that will enable teachers to develop curriculum programs using technology to help students learn academic subjects.

The $40,000 Eisenhower grant from the federal government was given to 13 teachers from 11 state school districts to develop the curriculum programs.

Navy Midshipmen David Hutsell and Eric Isaacson, both of Pullman, each received a grade of outstanding on their physical readiness tests and received Certificates of Excellence.

They are both assigned with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, University of Idaho, Moscow.

Beau G. Denham has been promoted in the Army to the rank of sergeant first class. Denham is a technical coordinator in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He is the son of Floyd and Esther Denham, Spokane.

Michael L. Letson Jr., a junior in international business and Japanese at the University of Montana, received a $3,000 Jack E. Corette Memorial Scholarship.

His parents are Bill and Susan Stanaway, Spokane, and Michael and Michone Letson, West Yellowstone, Mont.

Two Inland Northwest students have received degrees from Duke University, Durham, N.C.

Heather L. Rogers graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Rogers, Mead.

Russell W. Baker received a master of business administration. He is the son of William L. Baker, Spokane.

Kevin Smeltzer, a junior at Lakeside High School, received his Eagle Scout Badge, Scouting’s highest honor. A Suncrest resident, Smeltzer has been in Scouting since the fifth grade.

He is the son of Keith Smeltzer, Spokane.

Benjamin Spiger, Nine Mile Falls, was awarded a $2,000 Member Scholarship from Lutheran Brotherhood. Spiger will attend Pacific Lutheran University in the fall.

He is a member of the group’s Spokane Branch 8297.

Nancy Grunewald, Washington State University Press journals coordinator, was awarded an honorary lifetime membership by the Northwest Scientific Association for outstanding service as managing editor for the association’s quarterly journal, Northwest Service.

Grunewald has worked at WSU Press since 1977, and since 1983, she has been involved with its journal program.
