Revival Promises Preaching, Praying, Singing, Shouting
Remember camp meetings?
They’re those old-time revivals, often held under a big tent in rural areas. Fiery messages delivered by traveling preachers, lots of people and plenty of fresh air are the usual staples.
They aren’t much of a contemporary Northwest thing, at least not when compared to the phenomenon’s popularity in the South. But the Rev. Don McKinney, pastor of Abundant Life Church here, says it’s right up his alley.
He hails originally from Arkansas, and he’s bringing two weeks of nightly camp meetings here starting Sunday at 7 p.m. The meetings will feature well-known traveling preachers and be held outside under a big tent awning at 16607 E. Broadway. The tent is already up and difficult to miss from Interstate 90.
“It’s under the big top,” McKinney says. “We call it preaching, praying, singing, shouting.”
He expects several hundred to attend, and guesses some will come from Idaho and stay for multiple nights in their recreational vehicles. A nursery will be set up as will a soda stand and outdoor bathrooms.
For the first week, Kris Jackson of Missouri will be the featured preacher. “If you like good preaching, you’ll like him,” McKinney says, adding that Jackson has traveled all over the country delivering messages.
The following week features Walt Mills, a preacher and country gospel singer, and evangelists Larry Sullivan and Renee Thomas.
The revival’s final night is June 30.
Power Team visits
It’s not your average visit to church, granted.
These guys are weightlifters who break bricks with their bare hands. But they’re evangelists and motivational speakers, too.
Starting Wednesday, weightlifter John Jacobs and his Power Team - known for multiple appearances on religious television programs and jaunts all across the country - will visit Grace Harvest Fellowship for five nights.
By combining rugged physiques with religion, the group has wound up in the pages of People Magazine and has also appeared on CNN.
At Grace Harvest, they will break ice, bricks and steel. And some of their feats include fire, too.
A $2 donation is requested at the door. The performances will happen at 7 p.m. nightly through April 23.
