Ruckus Society Sessions Teach Protesting Without Ruckus

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Missoula-based Ruckus Society will set up camp in the woods outside Darby today for weeklong training sessions in conducting nonviolent protests.

About 150 members from around the Northwest and some foreign points - including Siberia, Australia, Europe, Canada and Korea - are expected to attend, said Mike Roselle, a Ruckus director.

Most will spend the summer in the national forests to protest salvage logging, he said.

Roselle said tactics such as tree-climbing, banner-hanging and blockading are justified when lobbying, legislation and lawsuits fail, he said. They are methods of last resort, but draw attention to issues, he said.

Participants in the classes will learn about the history and tradition of nonviolence.

The camp is on private land along Tin Cup Creek outside Darby.
