Trails Snowbound

Staff And Wire Reports

Backpacking

Backpackers are knocking on the door of central Idaho’s mountains, but nature is not letting them in.

Trails in the 8,000- to 10,000-foot Sawtooth National Recreation Area near Stanley will not be free of snow for hikers until mid to late July.

Geri Raymond at the Stanley Ranger Station is still advising people about hot spots for cross-country skiing.

“They’re still snowboarding on Galena Summit,” she said last week.

Up to 6 feet of snow remains in the high mountains ranging from the Selkirks to the Sawtooths. Some backroads are clogged with mud and snow.

Call Forest Service ranger districts for road and trail information before planning a hiking trip.
