Hoorelbeke, Hughes Lead Cda

Jesse Hoorelbeke struck out 11 and Todd Hughes cracked out three hits, including a two-run homer, as Coeur d’Alene defeated Kalispell 6-1 to win the Father’s Day American Legion baseball tournament in Kalispell, Mont.

Hoorelbeke scattered six hits and did not allow a run until the seventh inning, helping Coeur d’Alene roll to the title with four straight victories. Hughes had two singles, as well as his homer, and drove in three runs.

Hughes gave Hoorelbeke all the support he needed in the first inning.

After Travis Lovejoy walked and advanced to second base on a ground ball, Hughes belted his home run to right field. Coeur d’Alene (4-5) scored again before the inning was over then added a single run in the second inning and three more in the fifth.

Coeur d’Alene was at full strength for the first time this season.

John Barneson kept up his hot hitting as he and teammate Sam Hess had three hits apiece to lead the North Stars to a 10-1 AAA American Legion victory over the Cannons at Jackson Field in Spokane.

The Blue Devils thumped the Bandits 10-4 and the Royals blanked the Mariners 8-0 in the other games.

CFL team cuts Dyko

The Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League cut veteran offensive tackle Chris Dyko.
