Spokane County District Court Clerk Suspended
A Spokane County District Court clerk is on suspension from her job, the second time in four years the union steward has been in trouble at work.
Court administrators suspended Cynthia Medina, 37, on June 10.
Medina is still off the job with pay while court officials investigate whether she violated personnel policies, said Bill Keenan, president of county workers Local 1553.
She makes about $18,000 per year.
Keenan would not say what policy Medina is accused of broaching. “They haven’t disciplined her,” he said.
Keenan said the union is monitoring the matter to make sure Medina gets fair treatment.
Medina was fired in 1992 amid allegations she improperly filed a traffic ticket she received so she wouldn’t have to pay it.
She claimed she did nothing wrong and intended to repay the ticket eventually.
In 1993, an arbitrator ordered that Medina be reinstated with back pay, saying she deserved to be disciplined for the action but not fired.
Municipal court records indicate Medina hasn’t paid off $360 in probation fees from a 1993 conviction for driving under the influence.
The city of Spokane sent the delinquent bill to a collection agency last month.
Judge Daniel Maggs, who supervises District Court, refused to comment on Medina’s latest suspension.
“I cannot discuss a personnel file without a waiver from the employee,” Maggs said. “If she would sign a waiver, I’d be delighted.”
Medina, an eight-year court employee, also declined to comment.
