Inflatable Sub To Make The Rounds At City Pools
City pools opened this week for another wet and wild season, but kids will soon have a bigger reason to splash into summer.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department shelled out $3,500 for a 19-foot yellow inflatable submarine that features a play area and slide.
“We were looking for something that would be an interactive or unusual water toy” to help attract children to the pools, said Marion Severud, community affairs coordinator.
The float, for kids age 12 and under, will rotate to different city pools starting June 24 when it makes its first stop at Hillyard Pool.
In addition to the float, an extensive summer swim schedule is being offered by the department.
The county’s Holberg Pool, at 9615 N. Wall, opens today. For information, call 456-4730.
All four city pools in north Spokane - Cannon (at Maxwell and Elm), Hillyard (at Columbia and Market), Shadle (at Longfellow and Oak) and Witter (at Mission and Upriver Drive) - offer open swimming and lessons throughout the summer.
Open swimming is from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends June 17 through August 25. Hillyard and Witter pools have extended seasons that run through Labor Day.
Adult lap swimmers can dive into Shadle and Witter pools for sessions from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. weekdays.
Admission to city pools is free for swimmers age 18 and under; $1.50 per session for adults (including lap swimming).
Spokane residents also can purchase a season pass valid at any city pool for $30. Non-residents pay an extra $5.
Two-week swim lesson sessions for children are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. weekdays at all city pools. The novice swim league then takes over from noon to 1 p.m. at Cannon, Hillyard and Shadle pools, and from 11 a.m. to noon at Witter Pool. The fee is $20 for either activity for Spokane kids and $5 extra for non-residents.
Sessions start again July 1, July 15, July 29, and August 12.
For $20, people can enroll in aqua aerobics classes, held at Shadle Pool from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The next session is July 23 through August 22.
Adult (16 or older) swim lessons at Witter Pool are from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Registration is $22 for Spokane residents and $27 for non-residents. The next session is July 23 through August 22.
Anyone who is 17 or older and who wants to become certified to teach swimming can sign up for the two-week water safety instructor class that meets from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Shadle Pool, starting July 8. The fee is $65.
