National Unbeatens To Face Off

Three National Division unbeatens continue to make short work of their foes in the Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League.

Beginning Monday, the three leaders face each other in three successive outings.

Greenacres Gypsum, Les Schwab Tire and Olympic Sports collectively outscored their foes 88-6 during the week and have a 203-21 run advantage after 11 games this year.

Included was Les Schwab’s 15-1 and 18-2 wins. Brandon Strobel allowed two hits and struck out nine in five innings against Perfection Tire.

Tyler Winkelman was 4-for-4 with two doubles and Ryan Lyonnais hit a double and home run.

Against George Velis DDS, Adam Stultz pitched a two-hitter, went 4-for-5 including a double and triple. Jason Paul had two triples and a homer among two hits and drove in four runs. David Marlow went 4-for-4.

A seven-run first inning left Leo’s Studio the only unbeaten American Division team after last week’s competition.

Leo’s handed Jim Frazier Pro Shop its first loss, 11-5, taking advantage of several first-inning walks for the big inning. The team also outscored Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s 14-5.

Josh Thompson had four hits in six at bats and pitched one win. Simon Doi fanned eight while going the distance against Jim Frazier and Robert Worley had two clutch two-run hits.

Keeping it close are Jim Frazier and Valley Firefighters with the season approaching its midpoint.

During Food Rainbow’s 9-6 win over Banner Fuel in the National Division, Nik Armitage had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two others.

Midget trio unbeaten in five

Four Midget League teams are undefeated after two weeks and five games.

Ashco Insurance in the American Division has now outscored its foes 83-12, including a 40-5 advantage last week.

The team beat Valley Construction 17-1 with continued strong pitching by Jessie Stroh and Ryan Walley.

Norma’s Burger Barn-Adams is also in the hunt at 4-0 with one score unreported.

Last week the team beat Golden Eagles 18-1 with three home runs and combined 5-for-5 hitting by Patrick Rice and Dayne Kuhlman.

National Division leaders include Norma’s Burger Barn-Otis which beat George Velis DDS 17-1 and Spokane Valley Baseball 15-0,

Pitcher James Haile hit a double and three triples and Brandon Bucher had five hits, including three doubles in the wins. Haile had a dozen strikeouts and allowed but one hit.

Ethan Allen also has a 5-0 record, pitchers Joe Hennessey and Kyle Erwert striking out 14 during a 6-2 win over Olympic Sports.

Keith McCoy and Eric Foster each had a double and single.

Broadway Eye Care pitchers K.C. Little and Brett Neste helped the team to two more wins. Neste tripled in a pair of runs and scored twice.

Sam Brune and Chris Stiles of Gibson’s Nursery struck out 11 during victory over Tom’s Barber Shop. Stiles drove in three runs and Brune hit two doubles, the pair batting 4-for-6.

Pair locked in Pee Wee race

Two Pee Wee League American Division teams, Norma’s Burger Barn and Jim Psomas DDS are unbeaten in four games.

Both teams won twice last week, by identical 32-4 combined scores.

Chad Bucher hit home runs in each game for Norma’s.

Jim Psomas DDS pitchers Karl Womack, Willie Horlen and Scotty McFarland combined for back-to-back no-hitters.

McFarland had three hits in one game and a home run in the other. Womack hit a grand slam homer and Horlen had a three-hit game.

In the National Division, White Elephant is 3-0.

Highlights from last week included the 13-strikeout effort of Valley Instant Printing pitchers Bret Riggin and Jay Dee Edlund. Edlund hit a double and triple and drove in five runs.

Justin Beck fanned five and hit a home run for Screen Tek during a 16-9 win over Valley Electric.

His pitching counterpart, Curtis Baines allowed no hits and struck out nine despite the National Division loss.

Several Midget and Pee Wee scores have gone unreported.

Softball teams shine in tourneys

Spokane-area softball teams, combining the best players from local high schools, have done well in a pair of Moses Lake Tournaments.

Last weekend the Spokane Sting won an 18-U event over the Spokane Heat. The Sting included pitchers Carie Koker from West Valley and Jamie Fox from University.

The Heat are coached by Dick Mills, whose daughter Tori Mills from Central Valley is one of the team pitchers.

Earlier this year the Valley Villains of Nick Andrizzi and pitchers Cheryl Andrizzi from U-Hi and Trisha Stookey from East Valley were second in the Sun Basin 16-U tournament at Moses Lake.

Fourth were the Diamond Magic, which include U-Hi’s Lisa Muroya and Julia Yoke and WV’s Gabby McClintock.

June leg of Liberty Cup

Winner of the June portion of the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Golf Club Liberty Cup with a net 71 was B flight golfer Mabel Watkins.

Other leaders were Diane Joss at 77 in A flight, Margie Doyl with 80 in C and Ethel Rankin with 74 in D. Rankin recorded fewest putts in the division with 34.

Low gross winners included Diane Hicks and Jackie Shea at 96 in A. Hicks also won for fewest putts with 29.

In B flight, Jean Hatcher shot 94, in C Jamie Wolff shot 106 and in D Cathy Whitley shot 111.

Other putting winners were Mary Ann Grannell with 28 in B flight, Betty Blackburn and Barb Hafner with 31 in C.

Hanging Tree tournament

The Hangman Valley Ladies Club Hanging Tree tournament produced a tie during first round play.

In first flight, Billie Etter and Lesa Hambleton shared net honors at 73 and in third flight Marie Nelson and Arlene Levitch also tied .

Second flight leader is Fran Nord with 72 and fourth flight leader is Joyce Mohler with 80.
